The Daily Grind: What untapped survival sandbox theme needs love?

World of Warplanes

Zombies. Dinosaurs. Other people. Pygmies, for some reason. They’ve been done. But plenty of themes haven’t been tapped for survival sandboxes.

Joking in the Massively OP online offices the other day, our writers decided that MJ’s frequent travels deserve immortalizing as a survival game. “Introducing Air-1 Citizen: Follow protagonist MJ as she trawls airports and tries to make it to the right plane, which may or may not take off and convey her to her destination! We’ll have two modes: One is all about melee combat with airplanes, hijackers, attendants, and tourists; the other is a minigame for baggage handlers where you have to sort the bags into the right conveyor belt. (Insert GM joke about TSA agents stripping away your gear.) No need for a complicated launch; we can just keep Air-1 Citizen in early access forever, dividing it into smaller and smaller pieces — Air-1 Citizen: Bag Totality now comes split into the Bag Customizer and Bag Sorter modules, both at full price!”

OK, maybe not; we were all a bit silly and cynical at the time.

But what theme would you like to see in the next big survival sandbox?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Red Dead Redemption: Survival

Or simply the American old-west MMO that we haven’t ever really gotten before.

jesseschulkers LiF is definitely the closest we have to this, a game I’m keeping an eye on for sure. When and if LiF becomes more of a polished and finished game, I’ll definitely check it out again.
In the meantime I’ll be playing KC:D, amazing graphical fidelity and immersion. If only I could play it co-op with a good friend.

I would love to see a mech survivalist much the way EVE is done. So instead of ships in space its various sizes of mechs on a planet all fighting for resources to build bigger and stronger mechs.

tobascodagama I would expand on that. Have the player be caught between the authority and rebels. As the player tries to survive the turmoil by staying as neutral as possible, s/he keeps getting harassed by both authority forces as well as the rebel to assist them during battles. Maybe you are forced to hide rebels from being found by authority, or maybe you need to provide resources to the government troops during a skirmish/campaign. In either case, you’d have a choice on how to proceed, which in effect dictates how you are treated next time.

I just meant a western that has the open-ended mechanics from Elite. Trading where items are worth more in some locations than others, joining up with factions and earning reputation by doing jobs for them, helping to make factions more powerful in certain areas, exploring areas no one has been, gathering materials to sell while being on the look out for bandits, etc.
Not cowboys in space.
