Star Trek Online details the art design of the Tier 6 flagships

Tuesday point five.
Every Star Trek series has its iconic ships, and for Star Trek Online, the factional flagships fulfill those roles. Those flagships have recently received an upgrade to Tier 6, allowing players to fly around in the iconic ships of all three factions. But how has the changing landscape of the galaxy affected the Scimitar, the Odyssey, and the Bortasqu’ classes? A new entry on the official site details the changes made to the stylings of all three ships over time.

The Bortasqu’ received the biggest update, giving the designers a chance to allow more variable pieces and let captains really customize the look of this iconic Klingon ship. The Scimitar, meanwhile, was redesigned to appear more traditionally Romulan compared to the original Reman lines of the design, and the Odyssey itself was given comparatively minor changes to reflect the state of the galaxy. The silhouettes and shapes of the ships should be recognizable to players who have been away from the game, but the new styling will provide more design options while keeping the aesthetics modern.

CastagereShaikura I feel EXACTLY the same as you on this issue – that said the Sojourner Class version of the T6 Odyssey class flagships actually does have a round/circular saucer (in the description they claim it’s like the Galaxy class saucer; but the Galaxy class saucer is oval and the Sojourner’s saucer definitely is not oval. I really think that full ship design really took its cues from the 23rd century Constitution ships as the Sojourner hull and deflector are more circular in the front, and again have more of ga TOS era esthetic.

Ah, there ya go! My main is a Sci captain, but I’m perfectly happy flying the Pathfinder-class, so I didn’t give the Geneva much of a look (besides, I like a more agile ship :-) )
I appreciate the heads-up though. That’s ONE circular hull (heh). Now, if they’d just give us a few more (T6 Exeter or Excalibur-class, anyone?), maybe I’ll stop feeling like there’s a conspiracy in motion. :-)
Damn Section 31 … this is all Franklin Drake’s fault, I’m sure of it!

You need to play more, Lonegun :-D (I’m kidding)
POTENTIAL STAR TREK ONLINE PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD! TURN BACK NOW, IF YOU NEED TO!

But, indeed, in the latest game lore, the Federation-Klingon faction war is over, and the Federation is officially back to exploration and defense.
Star Trek Online being an online game, of course, there will always be reasons for in-game combat, but full-scale, galaxy-wide war is no longer happening in the game’s storyline..
It’s time to “boldly go” again. Enjoy it, captain!

CastagereShaikura From a lore perspective I think the changes in design overall is due to the Federation moving away from exploration and towards ships designed for warfare.

mysecretid CastagereShaikura Honestly, i think it’s just a natural evolution of the design. I mean the root of the ship design is still the same – two nacelles mounted on the body of the ship at an angle, with a round saucer section slightly elevated at the front of the ship. I believe that they’re trying to make it more “aggressive” and edgy looking, since the root of the game is still in combat, and the old design may turn off people for thinking it’s too “outdated” (which i personally disagree with).

mysecretid DanielReasor CastagereShaikura The Geneva class Command Cruiser does indeed come with a perfectly circular saucer. It’s one of the few, but it’s there.  You just don’t see it much as people prefer the Presidio’s sharper triangle saucer or the Concorde’s egg drop style saucer.

I think we’re talking about circular, as opposed to simply “rounded”. I own at least one of the ships you describe, and the designers still seem allergic to a bona-fide pre-TNG circular primary hull.
The closest they seem to be willing to come (barring retrofitted “classic” ships like the Ambassador) are “ellipsoid” or “oval”.
Again, I don’t hate other types of design in the least, it’s just starting to seem truly odd (to me) how rigorously the starship designers seem to avoid the simple circle-shape on new Federation designs, being that it was so prominently a part of the iconic original Enterprise.
To clear confusion, I’m not “e-peen arguing” here, pretending to be some sort of “authority”. I’m only talking.
If they have indeed provided a circular-hull variant on recent ships that I’ve missed, then that’s a good thing, and I apologize for my confusion.

The Engineering variant of this ship does come with a rounded saucer, which can be swapped onto your Science or Tactical flagship in the tailor.  Same is true of the bundle of Command Cruisers that came before this.

As an STO player, I agree.
While I don’t mind the other options at all, the lack of round saucers (except for low level starships in-game) is starting to be noticeable by its absence at this point.
I do know that CBS (who inherited the rights to all things TV Trek when UPN dissolved) are very cranky about certain ship designs which they feel encroach on certain aspects of the IP (specifically, endgame (T6) versions of TOS-style Constitution-class starships are expressly forbidden) — so maybe these sorts of conditions have translated out as “no round primary hulls past game level X”?
I don’t know.
But yeah, as above, the pronounced lack of round saucer hulls on higher-end Federation starships in the game seems odd to me too.
It would seem such a simple, minor way to occasionally nod to the source material everyone knows, but it’s rarely there in the designs.

I miss fed ships having round saucers. I never liked the oddy ship. The new ships seem to have a lot of sharp edges everywhere.
