The mystery of BioWare’s new online IP

The studio behind Star Wars: The Old Republic is working on a brand-new IP — and everyone is dying to know what it is.

A new BioWare job posting for a senior lead server engineer points to a previously unannounced IP with an online component. The posting mentions that an engineer who has experience developing titles with “significant online elements” is important to the studio. Could this be an MMO or a persistent multiplayer title? Read the pertinent part of the job description below and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

“BioWare is seeking a qualified Senior Lead Server Engineer for a new, unannounced BioWare IP. This role will direct a team of software engineers to create the backend systems that will drive online play for this exciting new game. The successful candidate will have expert knowledge of and experience in the design, implementation, and continuing support of large scale real-time client/server applications using primarily C++. Extensive experience with and knowledge of multi-tier client/server architectures as well as scalable distributed systems are required. Experience developing PC or console games with significant online elements is a strong plus. Experience with current cloud-based computing solutions and technology is beneficial.”

mysecretid Theo454 MChrome I took part in the Elder Scrolls Online beta, but once I found out about something I refused to pay for it once it went live and quit playing. What was this something I found out about? This forum post pretty much sums it up for me(and it seems the devs have no intention of solving the problem and don’t even want to admit it is a problem that should have been solved in beta)  http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/231468/a-desperate-plea-for-zos-please-remove-animation-cancelling

Quest/Hub Dune leading you through the valleys of a suspiciously mountainous desert with about 3 things to interact with on any given “level”. The giant worms will be an afterthought turned into a minigame/quicktime event.

Loopstah MorpayneRADIO I think there’s already a moba in development where you will build stuff in your lanes. Don’t remember the name. .

It’s good to see that Bioware are expanding outwards in that direction. SWTOR was a learning curve for them, learning to swim by diving in the at the deep end, and boy did they learn and can now swim with the best of them. That they can take that experience and make similar content is inspiring and gives me hope for online games future and Bioware’s.

“Must know everything.
Must have experience in everything.
Must be expert in everything.”

Sounds like any other job advertisement in IT these days.

That Shadowlands thing they were working on looked cool.

mysecretid I gave up on hoping for the best from Bioware when they released SWTOR. From Daniel Ericksen’s little gibes about “Han and Chewie wouldn’t want to dick around in space” rant, to Damion Schuberts “I believe SWTOR walks a centrist path between ‘games’ and ‘world'” bullcrap.  All hype, no substance.  Left me with a sour taste in my mouth when it comes to Bioware and online games.
