Star Trek Online is overhauling its skill system (again)
The skill system in Star Trek Online is kind of a hot mess. It always has been, from the game’s initial launch skills to its present system. That’s not editorializing – that’s a position that even the game’s developers seem to share, as outlined in the latest entry on the game’s official site detailing the upcoming skill system overhaul. The new system should make the difference between Ground and Space skills clear, eliminate useless or sub-optimal skills, and generally give players a solid picture of what they’re doing and why all through levels 1-50.

Skills will now be following an active and passive unlock system. Points are granted for Space and Ground skills per level, allowing players to actively unlock a variety of abilities; as abilities are unlocked in the various space disciplines, new skills are passively unlocked, while ground skills offer choices as more points are invested in the single progression track. Little to nothing is being lost, but a few new choices are being added, giving captains reason to find new ways to progress when the revamp beams onto the live servers later in spring.

Ugh, I hope all the chars are just reset to everything unspent rather than have things ‘converted’ straight into the new system with respecs in the cash shop.

STO devs; “We don’t have time to add exploration to the game, we’re too busy revamping the skill system for the 5th time since launch.”

I do find it annoying to have to respec again, for the third time!

Especially as It takes time to figure out what works and doesn’t work in the new skill tree, though I just hope Cryptic aren’t doing this just so they can monetize the trait and boff systems.

We really don’t need more items put into lockboxes that are hidden behind a paywall…

This is a desperately needed change to the game. The current skill system is… well, kinda godawful. I enjoy the game, but interacting with the pre-50 levelling mechanics is a huge pain in the neck. It’s arcane, not at all transparent, and wants you to make a ton of decisions without actually knowing that those decisions will do.

This looks a ton better.

It’s strange that they can make space ships in that universe, but still doesn’t know the difference between the Rod of Asclepius and the Caduceus when it comes to use as a symbol of healing. *points to emergency station*

This was sorely needed for years, just a shame they have such a smal team and such limited resources it takes so long for them to do anything substantial like this.
In this market, people won’t wait, they just move on. Luckily for Cryptic they’ve got the Trek name here to keep the diehards around. I wasn’t that loyal. I moved on to better games.

OMG you carebear themeparkers. All the 1337 know that it is not a true skill change unless it sells hundreds of thousands of dollars from the cash shop. :-)

Polyanna Way to buy into the Blizzard kool aid. After getting lazy having to rebalance skills every expansion their only option was convincing everyone it “couldn’t be done” but it looks like it worked on you.

Likely going to do jack all with how engineering is a crap combo with the action-focused ground combat system.
