Diablo III honors fallen developer with special cow level

Bumped into the extra special bonus cow level in Diablo III? It’s there for a good reason and a limited time as a tribute for a fallen artist. As Blizzard Community Manager Nevalistis explains,

“The Kanai event has actually been present since Patch 2.4.0 launched, but is only available during March – the real world birth month of Kevin Kanai Griffith, the artist for whom Kanai’s Cube (and King Kanai) is named. For those of you who may not know, Kevin was a talented and dedicated member of the Diablo III development team who passed away in October of 2014 from a rare form of cancer. […] This event is a chance for folks to get to adventure with Kanai one more time. We hope you enjoy the opportunity as much as we do.”

Nevalistis also linked to last year’s tribute post.

For those of you who don’t play Diablo III but still want to see the level in action, YouTuber MadTom has posted up a playthrough.

That’s really sweet. Sad, but sweet.

I like it when companies do that kind of stuff.

Well, I started the game, hope I run across this before the end of the month.

Probably wouldn’t have hurt to re-size those, but whatever.

I’m actually good friends with a former Diablo III dev (who has since moved on to a different company) and she clued me into an art book project on IndieGoGo to help Kevin’s family, and then when he sadly passed away, the proceeds would go toward charities that are dedicated toward research and curing that specific kind of cancer. The artbook was fanart from a LOAD of amazing artists in the industry of Kevin’s favorite video games, including Final Fantasy IV and VI, World of Warcraft, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, MKII, etc. I’m really glad I got in on it, and that it got enough funding to be hardcover-bound, because the art is simply gorgeous.

Sadly, I don’t think the book is available anymore, but I’ve just taken a few pictures of the art. It’s about 290 pages all said and done.
