Greaterdivinity Yes, this is what I thought too. When I saw the announcement I thought, “Cool, maybe I’ll stop in and play for a bit! … oh, there’s nothing for regular players? Nevermind.”

Karl_Hungus So true. WoW blows RIFT out of the water in pretty much every regard. And there is hard to find a game that tried to look like WoW as hard as RIFT

Syppi No offense intended – I just don’t love punctuation in titles. Especially our all-caps titles! Especially-especially exclamation points. :P

I don’t get it. Trion have an amazing set of contests for the 5th anniversary, and have made some uncharacteristically good moves with it. And all of this right after they’ve spent the last 2 months in overdrive on the ‘shaft the players’ train whilst beign dismissive and uncaring. The dichotomy… or cognitive dissoance even. It’s strong.

DarkWombat Did you play it after F2P? In my opinion the state of the game was better halfway 2013 than it was in 2011 / 2012. I’d say 2013 / 2014 was the best time to play Rift overall.

I feel almost sad that this game lived to be five years old since it’s a horribly butchered shell of its former self thanks to Trion stuffing it with as much cash grabs as possible.

Karl_Hungus Greaterdivinity Yep.  I currently hold a sub in WoW (through WoW coins) and haven’t touched RIFT since briefly dipping into it in the fall after Nightmare Tide (even though, last I checked, my account somehow still had Patron running on it).   WoW’s gameplay is simply better in the ways that count, and while RIFT does have some pros and strengths over WoW, the cons are much more numerous.  Not to mention I’m tired of Trion’s stance of “your subscription isn’t good enough” when it comes to their atrocious monetization schemes.

Damn, I first heard about this game in like 2008 when it was being called Planes of Telara, 5 years feels kind of short. So much hope for it to be good. And it was good for a few years, then they remembered they needed to make money and went into full-blown panic mode. I feel like Rift has worn so many faces at this point. Great but underrated WoW clone! Amazing company, best F2P on the market! Cool expansions! And now, Holy shit, trying to be NW level of P2W. C’mon Rift, time to go to rehab and become that game we all want to be proud of again.

In terms of world events, I’d agree but general combat in both PvE and PvP are terrible compared to WoW. The raiding is subpar at best. The class design really just boils down to how well you can copy/paste someone else’s macros. The PvP would be decent if it weren’t for the terrible engine optimization. I could go on but yeah, I agree there’s some things RIFT does better, but that list is very short compared to everything WoW does better. And it’s Trion’s fault we’re even making the comparison because they themselves put that target on their back.
