New and tweaked class specs arrive in WoW’s latest Legion build

When you're out in the club and you see a fly girl, do the creep!

The testing for World of Warcraft‘s next expansion is almost finished adding new specs for players to try out as the latest Legion test build has added Assassination Rogue and Frost Mage into the mix. That’s on top of the the various changes made to nearly all of the existing specs in this particular build, with several specs such as Enhancement Shaman and Beast Mastery Hunters receiving tweaks to their core rotations. Even if your favorite specs have already been available, they’re definitely getting changed.

The newest build also divides all classes and specs into having one of two GCD styles: The more common 1.5s GCD that can be reduced by Haste or a flat 1s GCD that is unaffected by Haste for specs meant to feel faster. The plan is also to add in Heroic dungeons for testing soon, which means that the expansion test is getting ever closer to resembling the expansion as it will stand on launch day.

flatline4400 This is why I have no interest in playing Warcraft any more: they keep changing everything. There’s no consistency anymore. Changing things I like into things I don’t like and I can’t keep up with all this shit either way. It’s like I know you think you know about the game and you have years of experience but now that means diddly squat time to learn everything over again. Coming back after a while is not like visiting an old friend or slipping a worn glove back on it’s like being launched into the middle of the ocean with a life preserver.

I still boggle at the mentality that makes them redo entire core systems with every expansion, spend 6 months after release fixing them, then doing nothing for the next year+ until the next expac.  What happened to iterating on working systems?  Why fix what aint broke?  Meh!

WoW players have been too conditioned. That’s why every positioning
ability in the game now has a viable alternative because people complained. Can’t Shred? Use
Mangle until you can because heaven forbid you ever spend a GCD not
hitting a damage dealing button. In FFXIV, the GCD is longer so you have
the time to re-position yourself so you can attack from the back or
from the side, depending on the ability. It might feel slower but it is more strategic and skillful as a trade-off, which can be refreshing in games that aren’t action combat oriented.

Karl_Hungus agemyth It’s just a different design decision, but you can still design encounters and class mechanics around positioning with a lower GCD.

borghive MrEllis Agreed. I wouldn’t even pay a sub anymore, especially not with those long waits with no new content. Since I have mountains of ingame gold, I simply use tokens, and with minimal effort, I earn back that gold with the garrison.
If there were no tokens, I’d not even be subbed anymore, not with those insanely long waits and xpacs like WoD. Currently, all I use WOW for is my “wake up FB-game”. On off-days, I wake up, make coffee and get started into the day while doing garrison stuff, and collecting all the gold from the AH. Nothing else anymore.
Still am grateful for the happy memories, and will try Legion, but I’m more than disappointed about the decisions they made in the last couple of years

At first the GCD in FFXIV felt weird but after getting used to it, I came to enjoy it especially as melee DPS because it allows for strategic positioning to be a thing, unlike in WoW where you get behind the boss as soon as possible and pray you never have to move.

They do need a shake up. To be fair it’s understandable how it could happen. Activision buying them didn’t help their corporate culture.

zoward It is the time it takes after casting a spell/skill before you can cast another. Most of the time in WoW GCD is 1.5 seconds.
In FF14 GCD is 2.5 seconds which feels dramatically longer than what most MMOs use, but I blame the console ports :P
