The Daily Grind: Would you play an Indiana Jones MMORPG?

99

Disney confirmed yesterday that the Indiana Jones franchise is getting a new entry. Starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg, Indy 5 is due out July 2019.

Indiana Jones has traveled video game screens several times before, but never in anything we could even charitably call an MMO, let alone an MMORPG, and it seems Disney plans on reviving interest. It could make an interesting setting — hopefully one where we’re not all playing the one true Indy with differently colored hats — but I’d love to see someone do something with an archaeology setting. Competitive digs! Booby traps! Mysteries!

How about you? Would you play an Indiana Jones MMORPG? What would it look like?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

On a related note,

One of my great gaming sadnesses is that the Tomb Raider games aren’t really Tomb Raider games any more.
Sure, the last two Tomb Raider games have been popular — they have really nice graphics, and they sell like crazy — but they’re not really Tomb Raider games.
I often think of them as Far Cry games modded to add in a female protagonist.

Again, nothing wrong with people liking that, and throwing money at it — but it’s not the exploration + adventure franchise that it used to be, and that I loved.

Again, I’m not saying that people who like the current reboot of Tomb Raider are wrong, or that they shouldn’t like it, but I wonder where to go to get that experience now?
(Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light on Steam was one the last “original style” TR games, but they botched the sequel there sufficiently badly that I don’t think we’ll see another).
And Lara — the new Lara is whiney, wimpy, and always uncertain, even as she’s dispatching more enemies than an entire mercenary company.
I miss the old, clever, confident  Lara, who was sort of the perfect cross of Indiana Jones and James Bond. “But these are prequels! She hasn’t got there yet!” the apologists cry, but after two games, I remain unconvinced. I think someone realized that if they “domesticated” her, and made her less of a James Bond-style “alpha” personality, it would sell better to that segment of the gamer population who think that the word “feminist” is merely a synonym for “bitch”

Anyway, I apologize for tangenting off your post — but perhaps an “adventure-themed” MMORPG is the only place I’ll see the characters in the mode of the original Lara Croft again.

Thanks for your indulgence,

Cheers,

Wakk is right, Secret World has been there done that essentially. And what are you gonna do, have just Indiana with a quest marker on his head standing around all day? Are you trolling or did you actually think this through? :D

schmidtcapela BryanCo  Oh, I’m fully aware of the old serials that Raiders was an homage to, but my comments were specific to an Indiana Jones based game.  There’s plenty of fun that could be had with a game based on the pulp tropes in general, but nailing a game to the IJ franchise would narrow down the avenues that could be explored too much.

schlag sweetleaf melissaheather  I think it’s being rebooted as a chick flick where Alexis and her girl gang have wacky adventures.

Can’t really see how an IJ MMORPG would work, but I’ve been encountering Harrison Jones in WoW for some time, first as an NPC, then in Cataclysm I spent time following him through a series of quests in Egyptian themed Uldum.  Then he turned up in Draenor as a follower that increased treasure rewards from missions and then in Hearthstone as a legendary card.  Think I’ve had enough of Jones in an MMORPG ;-)

melissaheather schlag sweetleaf I sincerely hope no one ever attempts a reboot/sequel of this film. Let it stand as the masterpiece it is and leave it at that;)
