RIFT starts testing its multicore tech

We’re betting that there are some of you in the Massively OP audience that gets an involuntary shiver whenever someone uses a sexy technical term, such as “multicore.” Please try to keep your shrill squees to a minimum while in the workplace or classroom as you read the rest of this article.

Trion Worlds started testing out its new multicore support for RIFT this week, and it’s invited players to check out the beta. The feature’s already been incorporated with the game, so there’s no special download required, just a change of the settings if a player is interested.

“Simply open up your RIFT settings, and in the Advanced Video section there is a checkbox to enable Experimental Multicore,” Trion instructed. “With one click the true power of your machine will be unleashed, and its performance in RIFT will reach new heights!”

Seriously, you lost it at “experimental multicore,” didn’t you? Apologize to all of those around you and try to act dignified for the rest of the day.

From what I gather so far it’s been pretty underwhelming with many seeing an FPS drop. But it’s early days yet and if Trion is serious about it (they’ve claimed to have spent a veritable shitton of programming time on the task over the last year, so I’d suppose that they are) then there’ll be further refinements. Hopefully soon. This is one of the few things that I’ve remained hopeful for.

hardy83 Very few. ESO finally updated to a 64bit client a few weeks ago. It’s strange though, considering MMOs usually emphasize raw CPU power over GPU usage, you’d think given the popularity of multicore off-the-shelf systems that MMO developers would build that into their engines, or use engines with that feature.

Not seen any improvement but I am playing on quite a reasonable alienware area 51 . I am not sure if it would make much difference ?

Greaterdivinity Inb4 it gives you 20 fps instead of 15 or knowning Trion litterally breaks the game or people’s hardware.

It would be nice if this could finally fix how badly this game runs in places, but at this point the only person cheering would probably be that one guy still making threads in the rift section of mmo champion at this point.
