Nexon’s LawBreakers will be a Steam exclusive, won’t be free-to-play

See, this is why no one likes you. It's because of this.

CliffyB’s Nexon-backed shooter LawBreakers isn’t breaking the law, but it might be breaking hearts over those medial capitals, am I right? At GDC this week, Boss Key Productions revealed that the OFPS will be a Steam exclusive aimed at PC… for now.

The game won’t be free-to-play, either, which MMO players will note is unusual for a Nexon-backed game over here and runs contrary to original launch plans. It’ll be a “digital premium title.” The price is still unknown, but Boss Key vows it “will not have the $60 price point of a traditional box product.” The FAQ reads,

“After careful consideration of how the game has been progressing, we realized free-to-play wasn’t the right fit for what we’re building. Lawbreakers is a competitive game at heart and that means balance is a big priority. Using a digital premium model helps ensure an even playing field by giving fans access to every available role without barriers.”

Things older than Quake often didn’t have teams in PvP. The original Doom, for example, had as multiplayer options only FFA Deathmatch and Co-Op PvE. And even in those old games that allowed teams, like Half Life, playing in FFA seemed more popular back then — though that was far before I had a reliable enough internet connection to play quick-paced games on it, so the absence of players interested in the team modes might have been a local thing.

BTW, I very much prefer free for all. Though it is in part because I really dislike using voice chat in games, and playing team-based PvP while refusing to use voice chat puts me (and my team) at a disadvantage.

PurpleCopper  “Remember when FPS multiplayer used to be free-for-all combat?”

No, actually, I don’t.   First FPS I ever played (and arguable the biggest/first of its kind) was Quake.  Which had both FFA, Team Deathmatch, and CTF.  Unreal Tournament was the same way

Can you give an example?

Siphaed yep feeling 100% the same.
even i bought hellgate lifetime sub, i “hate” hi-rez and not flagship studio.
why? because as you said hi-rez just https://www.google.co.il/search?q=abandoned&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjyhqrhoNDLAhWDCpoKHcj0CKgQvwUIGCgA the game after they said more open world to come and than GA2 coming out.

and why not flagship? because you can’t hate company after they sink into hell.

*i want to say im keeping hellgate alive in my post but i think hanibsoft not need my help to make ppl talke about HL XD

Yeah, I played Global Agenda also. As you say, it’s like High-Rez launched it, and then just decided they didn’t really want to do anything with it any moe.
One of the reasons I  stopped playing Global Agenda was the feeling that, if High-Rez doesn’t care about its game, why should I?
So, yeah, I also get skeptical whenever I hear about a new High-Rez game. “I’ll believe it when I see it” as the saying goes.

LawBreakers, perhaps not. As you say, it doesn’t seem particularly different from the rest of the pack.

I do think Battleborn could find players, though, not least because it does have a single-player/story aspect which will appeal to gamers who otherwise don’t play these games.

And then there’s the “Borderlands”-style quirky sense of humor, and over-the-top character and world design that Gearbox does so well when the developers there are on their game (pun).

Of course, when Gearbox screws up, they tend to really screw up — games like Duke Nukem Forever, and Aliens: Colonial Marines spring to mind.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but at least Battleborn looks from here like it’s trying to bring a little more in its game than just Team Fortress 2 done sideways.

We shall see :-)

Cheers,

Remember when FPS multiplayer used to be free-for-all combat? Now today you got all these team-based combat nonsense.

The only thing worse than team-based combat is a CLASS-team-based combat.

Not really sure what a CLASS-free-for-all combat would look like…

Quincha Higgens A Dad Supreme No, because its 2 games in the same space releasing near the same time that are both b2p, they are going to be actively competing. TF2 is old and is free, its like saying,Oblivion is competing with Skyrim, yeh they are the same genre but one is old. So old its not really competition any longer.

Quincha It is funny because, when one game is announced their is like 15 other games that look the same rushing to get a piece of the pie before that game comes out.
