Step up and get your first look at Pokémon Go

Gotta catch them all? If you ever felt like the handheld worlds in the Pokémon games were ultimately too small, then get ready for Pokémon Go, the augmented reality title that uses the entire world as its playscape.

Pokémon Go uses iOS and Android apps to interact with surroundings, challenging players to visit real world locations to capture critters and battle with others. The Pokémon people said that they’ll be doing an initial playtest of the game in Japan with a global rollout in later 2016.

Curious how this game might function? Visitors to SXSW this month were treated to a short preview of a player capturing Ivysaur with the game — and naturally, someone recorded that preview for your edification. Check it out after the break!

So this does in fact look disappointing….but I’m still gonna buy the hell out of the new game later this year (finally got that new 3DS for me and the lady, time to crush her hopes and dreams under my charizard’s boot)

What a let down.  I didn’t think it would work well like the cinematic but I thought they were going to use a new art style.

Pokemon is a plague on humanity, but this is kind of a cool idea

Barely more then 20 minutes experience with Pokemon but this looks awesome, I hope it actually ends up being fun.

I’d be willing to bet money that the higher quality pokeballs are where the cash shop firehose goes. Either way, this looked horrible compared to even low expectations.

Grinnen Uhm, hello? Ingress? We’re a ton of people already doing that ;)
Well, more or less. There are a lot restrictions in place as to where an Ingress portal may be located (e.g. it must be safe for pedestrians, can’t be on primary school grounds, must be accessible to the public in some degree etc.). I doubt very much that a PokeMon can appear anywhere.
That said, Ingressers have died/needed rescue while playing. A lighthouse or a mountain top is a nice location, but when you try to access it during a storm, things go wrong. But that also happens with GeoCaching.
