Final Fantasy XI is adding new mounts and new battle content with its next patch

Have you long seen the backs of animals in Final Fantasy XI and thought to yourself, “I could totally be riding that instead of a bird?” The game’s next patch will give you that opportunity by adding the new transportation option of mounts. No word on what those mounts will be or where you can use them, though.

The next patch will also add a new type of combat known as Ambuscade, which… again, we don’t know anything about. But it will be added. So details may be a bit scant at the moment, but at least you can take heart in the knowledge that Final Fantasy XI‘s maintenance mode is more active than many games which are still active.

Source: Mounts, Ambuscade; thanks to MrPoolaty for the tip!

A lot of care was put into the graphics, in true SE fashion. They are quite dated, but there are still some awe inspiring zones. The game is quite playable, there is a system called “trust” which will allow you to summon a full party of npc mercenaries. So you can solo your way through the entire story (and up to level cap) pretty easily. I think it’s worth it if you are into story content, because it’s a long epic one for sure. Also, the jobs in XI are a lot more fleshed out and intricate, and you have unique ones like dancer, blue Mage, rune fencer etc.

I love FFXIV, but never played XXI. Is it hated for new player? In 14 if I need dungeon for story, there is many high level players in duty finder to do it with me.
How hard it is to just see story for new player? How is system? Still playable? How is graphic?

Aww. Options are always nice but I always liked XI over XIV in the regards that you’d see only chocobos. That just screams FF to me. I’m not big on the huge amounts of mounts in XIV.

To be honest this was my first mmo, well I did play the Sims online but still I consider ffxi my first. I always compare other newer mmos to ffxi and always seen to wanna go back. I honestly feel the only thing keeping me away is the graphics. I remember playing xi even there was to be a major announcement regarding the final fantasy online brand. The announcement was ffxiv. The graphical upgrade all the new items character models oh man I was hooked. Then the pc launch was a disaster I guess. As a console player all I know is about a month before console launch shit hit the fan. The console launch was pushed backed and eventually the game was redid into ARR. Graphically 11 & 14 are night and day besides that I’m just not a fan of 14.
I’ll be transferring to pc but I wish I could find a modern mmo with as many qualities as ffxi. Or in a perfect world sqeenix reboots 11…

Just a PSA for people who play on laptops. If your laptop is on nvidia, check if it’s on optimus. Newer optimus nvidia laptops are pure hybrids where even if your nvidia card is doing its thing, it still passes the video output to the built in intel card. You cant completely turn off the built in intel card.
What this means for FFXI is that for some reason or another, it will not be able to see your nvidia no matter what setting you try. It will run purely from the intel card. This could lead to suboptimal FPS when combined with the fact that there is no more real directx8 support. You will be emulating directx with some legacy function or something and it just kills your fps (think 10-15 fps in 29fps cap game).

I’d love to try this game out, but it appears that free trials have been discontinued for many years now, and the only way to try it is dropping $40 in Steam…

louiedog_ I already went back to it a little while ago for old times sake and restarted with a new character. Still feels more fun than a lot of the newer games these days
