Trion announced today that the open alpha for its turn-based sci-fi PvP action game Atlas Reactor will begin later this week.

“Everyone’s invited to play in our Open Alpha! Servers open on March 31 at 2PM PDT. It’s our last Alpha event before Closed Beta, so join us, come play some games, and preview some of the changes coming to Beta. In this Open Alpha Event, you’ll be able to see some of the improvements we’ve made to Decision Mode and Resolution Mode clarity, as well as a bunch of balance changes – all based on feedback we got from our awesome community of Alpha testers.”

Massively OP’s Larry Everett scoped out the game back in February, calling it an “interesting concept definitely worth a second look.” We’ve got the latest trailer below!

Someone’s going to have to explain “turn-based shooter” to me.

moirrey Sorenthaz hardy83 I don’t think Trion should give everything away for free, I’m a firm believer that a subscription should be enough to comfortably play a game (which is the case in most MMOs), but their F2P models are just plain weird and contradictory at random.  They claimed in Rift that they didn’t want their subscription to be seen as necessary (their justification for not giving credit stipends monthly), but then ArcheAge released with an “optional” subscription that essentially forces you to pay up if you want to experience the housing system and the crafting that comes with it (or else mooch off of other subscribers via guild houses and such).

moirrey Sorenthaz ThunderJackson LordSolarMacharius Was.  Key word.  It’ s F2P now, with a subscription, and caters very heavily to whales by selling pretty expensive cosmetics and last I checked they basically sell giant packages every month for whales to eat up.   Also they tried some shenanigans with a $90 legendary weapon or w/e quite some time ago, have no idea if they kept that or not.

Sorenthaz hardy83 If there’s a market, why wouldn’t they sell?

I know many gamers think that publishers should be full charity outfits that give everything away for free and don’t try to make any money, but…

Sorenthaz ThunderJackson moirrey LordSolarMacharius Defiance was B2P, they didn’t even try subscription on it so… who should they cater for if not whales? The only other option I see realistically would be to bring out in relatively close succession paid DLCs.

ThunderJackson moirrey LordSolarMacharius Sorenthaz I think it’s more in general that Trion decided to just flat-out cater to whales full steam ahead without a care in the world.
The worst part of course is that they act like their games don’t revolve around and heavily depend on their whales.   Defiance for example would likely have been shut down already if there weren’t some whales out there who were willing to dump upwards of like… $90? On weapons and junk.
