BioWare is fixing the SWTOR sub cartel coin allotment bug

13
Observant Star Wars: The Old Republic players have been noticing that cartel coins granted to subscribers haven’t been accruing properly over part of the past year, sometimes shorting players by a few days every month, thereby adding up to the loss of a month’s worth of coins in a 10-month period. Our own SWTOR columnist Larry Everett confirmed his allotments were off by a few days some months as well.

But there’s no need to panic: BioWare Community Manager Eric Musco addressed the situation on the forums earlier today. “Since August of last year an issue creeped into our granting system which caused Cartel Coins to be granted every 33 days, instead of every 30 days as intended,” he confirmed, telling players a fix is on the way next week.

“No one should have missed receiving any coins due to this issue. When you have 30 days of subscription time, you will receive your monthly Cartel Coin grant during that 30 day window. That is still true. Due to this issue you may receive it on a later day then you did previously, but you will still receive it within your current subscription window. […] Understand that this issue has only been going on since August of last year. The accumulation of 3 day delays has not occurred enough at this time to cause any issues in granting Coins. You should have received all Cartel Coin grants as intended (although perhaps a few days later than usual). If you feel you are missing any of your Cartel Coin grants please contact CS.”

>we used to get coins for achivements

You still get coins for the achievements that reward them – but obviously you can only get the achievements once (per server). You probably got a load at the start when the achievement system was introduced as you had already completed the achievement requirements (such as levelling a class) and therefore the achievement and coins were rewarded as you logged into characters.

>that I started at six hundred a month got dropped to 550 and now I’m at 500 a month

If your referring to the subscriber cartel coin grant the amount of coins given is related to the subscription length you purchase. 6months gets you 600/month, 3months gets you 550/month, 1month gets you 500 a month.

So they started the free to play version and thus the coins at the end of 2014…, we all got coins for being subbed prior to the free to play launch and there was an holocron article on it but you can see right from the start the coins where when ever… I have my entire log looking like that but it was interesting to look back and remember that we used to get coins for achivements… though every thing was really expensive when it started… like the market kisok on my ship was nine hundred credits… that I started at six hundred a month got dropped to 550 and now I’m at 500 a month… that said I made a million credits off at least one of the jet packs I got randomly out of pack…

As much as I really don’t care about cartel coins, I am interested that Eric Musco’s replies on the subject are basically “it hasn’t affected anyone”.
-musco:
Will we be compensated for the Cartel Coins we missed receiving?
No one should have missed receiving any coins due to this issue.
I checked my ledger and I am missing XXX coins, what do I do?

Understand that this issue has only been going on since August of last
year. The accumulation of 3 day delays has not occurred enough at this
time to cause any issues in granting Coins.
Math is hard apparently.
Since August, the coins have been dropping 3 days late, cumulatively. Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar = 8 months, or 7 depending on whether August should or should not be included. Let’s give Bioware the benefit of the doubt and say 7.
For everyone to have cartel coins missing, the problem would have to have existed for 10 months minimum. It’s 7, therefore it has not affected everyone.
But “not everyone” is not the same nobody.
Right now, everyone’s coins are being allocated 21 days (7 * 3) later than they were in August last year (or 24) days. Are Bioware rolling back those 21 days? Seemingly not. Are Bioware allocating additional coins pro-rata to those 21 days? Seemingly not. So if previously someone’s coins were arriving on the 3rd, they’re now arriving on the 24th – if that were real money, people would be pi**ed.
And what about the people who’s subscriptions lapsed at any point? A lot of people use 30 day and 60 day game cards and don’t always use them back to back. A couple of days gap between renewing could mean people missed out on coins if they WERE subscribed on the 30th day anniversary, but not the 33rd. Though I’d need to clarify if someone who used a 30 day card receives cartel coins for their 30 days. If it is “normally” allocated on the 31st day (30 days after their 1st day), they would never receive coins anyway.
Another area where lapsed subscriptions matter is anyone who decided to let their subscription lapse. Again, consider the person who’s coins were previously allocated on the 3rd (and yes, I know it wouldn’t be the 3rd every month – I’m trying to keep things simple) and as a result of the accumulations of 3 days per month means it now is calculated on the 24th. If their subscription ended on the 5th, they wouldn’t have received their coins, but they should have because they were still a subscriber on the 3rd.
There might be some subtlety or T&C’s I’m missing here, but it seems some people might be affected Eric. And it’s the dismissive nature of the replies that concerns me more than the coins.
Of course, there’s the “get out of jail free” card of “If you feel you are missing any of your Cartel Coin grants please contact CS.”. But that put the burden of actually thinking the problem through on the customer.

I see what’s going on here.

“Alright so when the sub routine compounds the interest is uses all these extra decimal places that just get rounded off. So we simplified the whole thing, we rounded them all down, drop the remainder into an account we opened….It’s very complicated. It’s uh it’s aggregate, so I’m talking about fractions of a cartel coin here. And over time they add up to a lot.”
