Darkfall: New Dawn explains its decision to reboot

Are you confused over why a small PvP MMO like Darkfall would ever warrant a reboot, nevermind two? Or why these competing reboots wouldn’t just merge forces or have one of them back down? The folks behind Darkfall: New Dawn penned a dev diary to explain the pressing question of why they’re going to all of this trouble to take the game back to its roots.

While the New Dawn team doesn’t address its competition, it does go into depth about its vision for the reboot’s existence: “In short, we recognize that Darkfall, as it was, is critically flawed, but we are confident we can solve these issues […] To us, it means that Darkfall can finally reach its full potential. Darkfall is a game that has a real soul and deep emotional appeal and it can now get a make over to also have superficial appeal and get new players to love it. It means that this is a chance for Darkfall to be more than what it was and cement a lasting place in the MMO landscape.”

The team reiterated the feature points that will set New Dawn apart from Unholy Wars, such as having less grind, an alignment system to combat the gankbox environment, a fleshed-out economy, and territory control.

DoctorOverlord they did not make the game. The original devs are Aventurine/Razorwax. The people from New Dawn just received the source code and they are trying to fix the game now.

Not often you see devs admit their game was critically flawed.  Kudos for their honesty.  But it does make one wonder why no one figured that out. “Critically flawed” is like building an airplane without wings, it’s not something anyone should miss.

SallyBowls1 Samizdat karmamule I’m also seeing lots of comments from people mystified as to why this little niche game is getting not one but two fan reboots.  I’m neither defending nor criticizing the particulars of the game, just commending people for not just forum griping about their fave game, but instead actively trying something.  I like seeing that sort of initiative regardless of whether the game is actually one I consider interesting or not.

SallyBowls1 Samizdat karmamule I suppose, if you think people enjoying a particular type of game are sociopaths. I think that’s inconsistent in itself.

Did they change the original macro bot no hard cap leveling system? I remember having to keep my pvp on 24/7 while macro running and firing off skills to level them to rediculouse levels in the original game. This resulted in me being able to go 1 v 20 etc which was fun for a while.

I’ve high expectatives for this New Dawn vision if they really are able to deliver all these garegous new features from a sandbox point of view.
These guys have all my respect to venture into this difficult path, invest their own money and time to make a new sandbox from an old game. They are very passionate and deserve to meet their ambitious goals.

It is amazing that the same people bashing them for rebooting a failed game probably(at least hopefully) tried the game and quit for the main problems each company aims to fix first and foremost. Why bash them for trying? There will be alphas, betas, stress tests and eventually a launch offering many opportunities to try it or wait and see what happens. Even if you buy it and don’t like it, it’ll still be no more of a waste of your money than purchasing any of the MMOs that have launched in the last 5 years. Or don’t buy it and let those who want to do so…

Samizdat karmamule  But isn’t it the reboots being criticised, not the rebooting?  It is consistent to think both that these are bad games but like that they exist since it improves mainstream MMOs to give the socio… I mean “emergent gameplayers” a place to “emerge” without impacting the mainstream.

A very niche pvp oriented game that has balanced clumsily on the cliff edge of failure since release, that requires a sub (and box price too??) with no seemingly free trial… wants people to care about a reboot?

Yeah… thats pretty funny.

Reminds me of the Democrats vs. Republicans.
Neither side will give an inch, and to hell with what is best for the nation.
