Dive into the maw of Doom’s open beta next week

The newest iteration of Id Software’s demon shooter Doom is almost upon us. Doom — the first entry in the classic series since 2004’s Doom 3 — is scheduled to launch on May 13th. For those with itchy trigger fingers and an incurable impatience, there’s a balm coming next week in the form of a four-day open beta test.

The open beta, which will run from April 15th through the 18th, won’t feature the story campaign but instead will give testers two multiplayer maps to dominate. Any and all are welcome to try out a team deathmatch and a moving king-of-the-hill mode to see how this version of Doom handles.

Following its launch, Doom has three DLC packs in the making which can be purchased individually or via season pass. The first DLC will include a trio of new maps, a playable demon, a different weapon, and all sorts of other goodies.

Siphaed Why MOP covers what they cover in two easy articles:

I’m offended by occult images as well as firearms. What will be done for me?

My only concern about DOOM is that it’s a Bethesda title. They’re like the modern day Obsidian. Really good IPs, but all of their games are always broken and players eventually need to take over patching their games with unofficial patches.
That said, I am definitely interested in the title and I’m keeping an eye on this. Some streams of the game have already been on Twitch and it looks good. Very basic at the moment, obviously, but good. Then again I do have those rose colored glasses of being a fan of the games.

Ugh, DLC’s. That really kills my excitement. Way to go Massively! I might get it anyway if its goo but not until I see how it plays.

Estranged I don’t mind Doom getting an article, nor other non-MMO games (I love CCG coverage!) or even the dead MMORPGs (hello COH and SWG!). I am simply wondering why a large and very alive MMORPG gets close to none. Since the new MOP, Ingress has gotten 2 own articles, had a one liner in 5 MOP-UPs and once in Not So Massively. I started playing in June last year, since then, some of the things that has happened is:

* There has been 3 XM Anomaly events, and a new one has just been announced, dates and places before and results after could have gotten a line. But more importantly anomalies drive the game and the story forward, they influence the game world. The last event was won my the Enlightened faction, they got hold of the Obisidian shield and activated it. This has caused am XM (exotic matter) draught in the game, there is no XM to be found around portals any more. This is a huge thing in the game, it drastic alters game play as XM is what powers our scanners (mobile phones).
* Three new items has been introduced, the MUFG-capsule (gear stored here might multiply), the SoftBank Ultra Link (increases link range of portals) and the Lawson Cube (works like a temporary auxiliary XM storage). Ingress is not gear heavy (we have like 15 different items, that’s all), so new gear is a big thing, and all of these made impacts on the meta game play. The MUFG caused abundance of AXA-shields (strongest there are), the SBUL made BAF (Big Ass Fielding) more accessible and the Lawson Cube gives a substantial edge at an XM anomaly.
* They have introduced a cash shop! That got a one line mention in MOP-UP. In addition the announcement made quite some fuzz when someone used the wrong pictures to promote the shop and it looked like we were going to be able to buy weapons there.

*Niantic (the developer) broke off from Google.
*Huge shit storm when visitors in nazi concentration camp plays Ingress, causes all portals in and around such sites to be removed.
* And we’re all fan of player accomplishments in games, right? Someone levelled from 1 to 8 in 66 minutes (that’s close to the theoretical possible minimum time). A large team made a multilayer BAF covering the whole of Europe (see image). If you don’t know how ingress is played, just let me assure you that it’s easily one of the biggest accomplishments in MMORPG history. Ever.

PS: Feedback in the form of constructive criticism does not equal whining.

Siphaed What’s not multiplayer about an arena shooter mode ? As far as internet terms go, multiplayer has become the term for you can shoot each other in a box and co op means you can play the game with other people.

I don’t  think anyone is trying to pretend this in an mmo or that this site only covers mmos anymore.

Estranged I like all the mmo stuff getting covered but this extra stuff is interesting to me as well. I’d like to see more of it. It gets a little tedious when the only news is a game making an announcement that they will be making an announcement about the game at a later date.

TBPlayer2112 I grew up playing doom. I remember may nights that turned into days and back into nights all while playing doom.  The ” good old days” when the internet was your friend bringing his computer over and us trying to get the stupid serial cable to work!

Even with all that pulling at the nostalgia strings… I’d still go for OW first. I think you know what you’re getting with OW. Doom on the other hand could go so horrible wrong so easily. If it turns out to be great, it will still be great when you buy it later.
