Beta blossoms on Tree of Life’s branches

18

After a year of preparation, Tree of Life’s beta test is finally here.

The test marks the debut of an almost brand-new look and feel to the game. Tree of Life has upgraded its character models to give them more of a cartoony look and has more or less wiped the entire sandbox world. New features have been added with the beta launch, including beards, make-up, additional terrain types, axes, pickaxes, secret areas, and protection for newbies.

The beta will coincide with the launch of Tree of Life’s cash shop, although the game doesn’t have anything in it just yet. There are several changes to stats and items that should be noted in case you were intimately familiar with how things used to be. Change: It’s what’s you get when you climb this tree.

All editions of the game are currently 30% off on Steam.

CistaCista Sorenthaz arktourosx The thing though is that it isn’t really advertised as a survival game and it doesn’t really play like one after you get past the early game hurdles of not having a stable food supply (which can be gained in one of several fashions – growing crops through farming, fishing, making use of animal husbandry to breed cattle, and so on).   The “survival” tag that this game has on Steam falls under the “popular user-defined tags for this product” section, and there was a notable crowd that came from RUST/DayZ/etc. at launch who thought they could just do whatever the hell they wanted without consequence only to get turned away when they realized it’s not just another gankbox.

The server was extremely laggy last night.  Wasn’t able to get a lot done unfortunately.  The fog is certainly annoying, I setup my stuff extremely close and folks already ran past me exploring.  Was fun to be on and some of the additions are nice but the performance last night was terrible but after a huge update that is to be expected.

CistaCista I just ended up deleting my character anyway.  Skills weren’t wiped but my character wasn’t doing the correct dmg based on my 22 martial arts skill.  Was annoying so I just deleted him and started out fresh to play around.

There is a lot of negativity atm because a) they did not wipe stats and skills, and 2) the game world is larger, but half of it is shrouded in a dense mist.
I think people shpuld relax and remember it is a beta – we are supposed to test and break the game for them. New players should just stay clear of the mist, find a spot on the coast, maybe some fellow players, and start skilling up and camping out. It’s fun!

Sorenthaz arktourosx It’s a survival game in the sense that you have to eat a lot the whole time though? When you are a new player that is a real burden, so that is something that challenges you to plan and skill up quickly so you can get meat.

Good patch but they should wipe everything and let everyone start from scratch.

arktourosx Sorenthaz  To add because edit timers: If it were a survival sandbox then it’d be all about having to build up and survive the harsh wilderness and hunger would probably kill you.  Instead right now it’s more like you just carve out a piece of the land for yourself and then deal with the dangers that it brings.  Which right now sounds like it’s just the Mermen faction and PvP.
So they’ve got a long ways to flesh stuff out.
One red flag I’m noticing though is that they removed their list of planned features from the Steam page and Early Access FAQ.   I.e. no magic skills to learn, no dungeons (which would be randomly spawned portals out in the world, and completing them would alter the world in various ways), Mermen sound like they’re the only hostile NPC faction planned, etc.  Really hoping they didn’t quietly sweep those things under the rug and act like nothing happened.

arktourosx Sorenthaz I think their idea is to just get as much features out and then fix that stuff up closer to launch.  But who knows.  They haven’t been *that* successful, but they have been successful for the scope of their team I suppose.
I agree though it was hard to stay logged in to ToL today.  Part of that for me though is that I don’t have any friends who want to get back on it with me, and my character has a variety of skills leveled that I might want to change but don’t feel like rerolling my character for.  The game still felt enjoyable for the bit of time I spent in it but I haven’t bothered getting back on after the emergency maintenance was announced to deal with the lag.

Sorenthaz I dunno, I logged in, everything was maxed out, perfect char/stats…started naked out on a beach…just couldn’t bring myself to make it past 5 minutes.  Really these guys want a survival MMO but lack the infrastructure for it.  The lag is crippling like it was before.
It’s like they’re too successful for their own good lol…

arktourosx BrixxBronx Maybe it’s 6 hours running around the world’s edges? *shrug*
