Guild Wars 2 begins testing WvW world linking today

I can see I'm going blind.

ArenaNet is kicking off the first stage of Guild Wars 2’s WvW World Linking beta tonight beginning at 10 p.m. EDT for North American servers; Europe’s began earlier this afternoon. The goal? To even out the populations in the mass-scale WvW battlegrounds.

“We used factors like the world’s current rank and population numbers to define pairings,” writes ArenaNet. “For NA we will be able to divide the total number of worlds in half, and give every world a partner. However, pairings for EU are a lot trickier, both because there is an odd number of total worlds, and because there is an odd number of specific language worlds. EU also has a greater number of well populated worlds, so it makes sense to link fewer worlds. The result is that a number of worlds in EU will not be linked.”

The studio says that as populations “drift” in the future, it may link more than two worlds together for WvW purposes.

zandog  it’s running on a modified engine form the first game, a game built for small group play. It was never going to be enough to handle the load of a large number of players and probably never will be unfortunately.

Karl_Hungus To be honest, they brought it on themselves.
Here’s to hope they make it a bit better for now, and improve with time.
With that, i mean: “Don’t fuck it up.”

Performance issues will always exist in some scale for games of this nature. That’s not the underlying issue with either WvW or GW2 as a whole. Just a glance at the WvW forums will show you that performance issues are among the least of our concerns. But when you look at the AvA forums for ESO, you’ll see that all they do is bitch about the performance. So GW2 doesn’t have any real engine problems compared to similar games that are half its age. I’ve never dropped below 60 FPS in either WvW or during fights like Tequatl, but then again, I keep my rig running on the best and most recent hardware upgrades. YMMV.

Pairingcis not going to fix the underlying and main issue with GW2. Whether it’s WvW or Tequatl, the game engine is poorly optimized for large group events and tips over its limit when getting more than 50-60 players together in the same area. The amount of skill lag and frame rate drops caused by data bottlenecks and bad engine optimization has and will continue to be the problem GW2 and it’s community will face. I don’t know the answer to fixing this but I’m pretty sure it starts from scratch with a properly optimized and proven game engine and maybe even proceedurely generated technology so that much data to maintain large scale events are better executed.

Esoteric Coyote Something which allow server communities still play together and i am pretty sure some players from low populated worlds are/will be shocked how WvW should look like. It is much better system then any alliance mega servers, where you would destroy communities completely. This is dynamic system, worlds are paired temporary etc. Still they must do a lot of things like to prevent stacking servers. Stacking servers and population balance issues are also connected to scoring system, which is broken and favors bigger population, world is winning matchup by having the best coverage 24/7, which should not be the case. There should be possibility of come back, give underdog worlds chance an reason to keep trying and fighting.
Hopefully they will start implementing new scoring system soon, they have already developed it (has been leaked with other wvw changes).

ANet is either going to get this right and WvW will only feel marginally better, or they’re going to fuck it up and everyone’s going to hate it.

digi_owl They already answered in their Q&A session on Tuesday that only same language servers will be linked.
