The MOP Up: Richard Garriott’s new book (April 24, 2016)

12

The MMO industry moves along at the speed of information, and sometimes we’re deluged with so much news here at Massively Overpowered that some of it gets backlogged. That’s why there’s The MOP Up: a weekly compilation of smaller MMO stories and videos that you won’t want to miss. Seen any good MMO news? Hit us up through our tips line!

Richard Garriott (Ultima Online, Shroud of the Avatar) has penned an autobiography called Life at the Extremes in which he talks about all of his life’s crazy adventures. You’ll have to wait a little while to read it, however, as it won’t be out until next January. In the meantime, check out lots of online gaming news, including stories from DC Universe Online, ARK, Eternal Crusade, and more!

New Games and Testing

Patches and Expansions

  • Flyff: The Turning Point Part 1 expansion that came out earlier this year in Asia will be coming to Europe and North America later in 2016. According to the PR statement, it should be good: “Generations of Korean and Japanese players celebrated this extraordinary content update together.” [Source: press release]
  • Heroes of the Storm: The 2016 spring champion’s mount — a spiffy-looking hoverboard — will be added to the game’s store in the next update. Is it something you’d drop $5 to get?
  • Grim Dawn: Modding tools are on the way this month for this ARPG, followed by a content update called The Hidden Path. In this update, you’ll choose to go down one of three paths set forth by witches. Good luck!
  • Skyforge: Get the full patch notes for this week’s Reapers’ Revenge update!

Odds and Ends

Videos

Eternal Dawn’s dev team came together to talk about the title’s progress, show off some of the gameplay, and answer questions from the community.

What happens when you merge video games and live acting together? Apparently, Heroes Must Die. The game had a performance this past weekend and will be reprising the show at PAX. Check out its trailer to get a handle on this concept:

We’ve got a spiffy new ARK: Survival of the Fittest trailer for you to celebrate the game’s imminent arrival on PlayStation 4 this summer!

Age of Wushu Dynasty pumped out its Rivalry update on April 21st with a level cap increase to 70 and support for seven languages, including Russian.

Damonvile i was being a bit too brief. tabula rasa cost ncsoft and their investors 100 million dollars.

gariot’s space tourism was said to be marketting for the game as the story went in defense of it from gariot at the time the whole controversy was going on.

which ncsoft overstepped in their reaction but i honestly can’t blame them for being pissed with him over teh shit he pulled in that episode, shirking his job as lead developer on the most expensive game to date to train for space tourism he convinced them to bank roll for marketting purposes that utterly failed at that purpose.

which he now shameless shmoozes on camera talking about as if it’s a legitimate high point of his career, when in reality it as a gross demonstration of arrogance hubris and thumbing nose at caring about the people who funded his products.

and now he sells thousand dollar houses that look like they were made by middle schoolers doing maya tutorials. gg no re.

No one has paid 100 million to be a space tourist…yet. gariot is on record for a price of 30 million.
At more than 3x the actual amount paid….you might be doing a little revisionist history of your own.

Xijit deekay_zero oh is that the revisionist history now? i remember when it was totally ncsoft’s idea and it was for marketting purposes.

Dude, stop talking out of your ass: he paid for it out of his own pocket and the launch window was a hard date.
Then NCsoft fired him in a way that was intended to screw him out of compensation he was due, so he took them to court and the courts raked them over a fire for it.

does richard gariot talk about how he convinced ncsoft to spend 100m on sending him on a dream space vacation during crunch time of his latest game? does he talk about bragging about screwing them out that money for years to come?

Xijit Apparently.  That and there are a bunch of private servers for it if the subreddit for it gives any indication.  Probably because it sounds like the main game is stupidly P2W and exploitable.

Wow, Flyff.  That’s a game I have not heard in a really really really long time.

Like I think I played it sometime between 2004-2005 and only because it looked like it was similar to Ragnarok Online but had the ability to fly in it.

Interesting to hear that it’s still kicking and getting updates.  As far as I remember it’s pretty much that type of MMO that no one knows about.
