The Daily Grind: Will Blizzard ever make WoW 2?

WoW

On the heels of Blizzard’s announcement that World of Warcraft’s Legion expansion will arrive at the end of August, I saw several comments on blogs and even in my own guild’s chat wondering whether World of Warcraft 2 will ever happen. Some people are convinced Blizzard is already working on a WoW 2 in secret — which admittedly would account for the incredibly slow pace of WoW’s own development. Other people are convinced that Blizzard has all but abandoned the MMORPG space after its cancellation of Titan and re-engagement with other genres.

I’d like to think that Blizzard has a surprise up its sleeve, but I know better than to bet against the odds. What do you think? Will Blizzard ever make WoW 2?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

In 2020 they could reboot it as World of Warcraft: The Next Generation. They could continue expanding the WoW-verse with some single player (RTS or RPG) games such as WoW: Voyaguer or WoW: DS9 (Dragon Soul, theres no such thing as space in WoW!) They could even carry on the movies and ret con the whole thing by having Anduin travel back through a wormhole to change the past as we know it.

What I found surprising is that nearly no one takes in account that a game is made by people employed in a company at a specific time, not made by the company itself. Once we start the reasoning from this fact, it would be interesting to know how much of the people who made WoW a success are still employed at Blizzard. From various articles and reports over the years, except those big names on the executive level, not so many (but I might be wrong). If there are very people from the first hour remaining in the company, how could we expect Blizzard to make a new, exciting MMO?

Putting the brand “Blizzard” on a game makes it sell well, indeed. But it doesn’t magically make it good, or at least stand out in terms of quality. Blizzard has lost its edge when it comes to talk about excellence. They’re still making good games, but not excellent ones like before. Their most recent games tend to prove it. In my opinion, all game developers are not equally talented and cannot replace each others (despite it is seen a lot like this by executive people in a lot of companies). When you lost talented people, you aren’t assured to get new ones equally talented, even if your name is Blizzard. And that’s why I think they don’t have the skill set anymore to make a successor of WoW that wouln’t disappoint.

But again, that’s just my opinion.

Why would Blizzard exit the MMORPG genre when it’s made them a trillion million dollars over the past 12 years?

of cource there will be another MMORPG from them, to think otherwise is insane.

This Game made them rich bejond measure. Only because they failed with Titan development does not imply otherwise, only that they have a high standard and want to make it right.

There is still time for them to do it as long as they can keep a healthy player base for the chash to come in. It could take even a long time after WOW faded even more for them to make it real, so gamers are hungry for another good solid AAA MMORPG.

quark1020 DrowNoble ESO is doing awesome, console numbers are staggering. ESO is such a better game than GW2

They won’t make it any time soon, if ever. Why would they make something that will take people away from a cash cow they already have. It like Elder scrolls 6, we wont see it for a long time, they don’t want to take attention away from ESO. This is why Todd Howard keeps saying nothing about it and just lets us know about 3 other titles.
Warcraft movie coming out soon, everyone will see it the get Legion play it for 2 months. Blizzard will make a tone from it and then take a rest, planning for the next xpac.

I think the writing has been on the wall for some time when even the most “successful” MMO cancels development on their next one. Lack of any AAA titles in the works for at least the past year or two. A long string of make a quick buck on box sales and watch population dwindle after launch day projects. Tons of “games” that are nothing more than storefronts for cash shops.
The golden days of MMO/MMO development are long behind us, though much like when MUDs became history, I think it’s going to take players some time to realize it.
It’s possible MMOs make a resurgence at some point. If only because the console crowd is incredibly divorced from what’s gone on in the PC space, and I could see someone there making a real move on that front at some point, and it seemingly like something new (just look at how much wow factor Destiny got on consoles….years after persistent online shooters were a thing on PC). And, on PC, given enough time for memories to fade (both players and investors), I could see MMOs make a resurgence as well, but I don’t see anything bright in the short to medium term in this space (ie: I see nothing good about the genre within the next 10 years, but with some hope something might resurge after that).
Just continue playing the oldies or getting heroine fixes playing the fly by night cash shop niche games.

Nope.
even with 2million subs the game get more profit than most of the b2p games.
the only change i think blizzard could make its hybrid model with b2p + expansion and p2p.
with this change and maybe texture updates the game could make more players = more profit.

nowdays its hard to make successful p2p only game, those game cost alot of money to develop and blizz know that.
