“In every world and age, storytellers argue the mystery of Gaea’s death. Who is the villain? What was the cause? Every bard sings a different tale, yet the end is the same: Gaea died: her blood scattered, her divinity spilled.”

The story of Crowfall’s Trees of Life begin with the death of a goddess, Gaea. In a new lore piece, the team explains that while the reason behind Gaea’s demise is unknown (although quite bloody), the result was that her tree “sisters” drank up her blood and became a faint echo of Gaea’s former power.

While these trees will no doubt have a role to play in the game as a force against the Hunger, their fate looks all but sealed. That borrowed power will eventually fade and vanish, erasing the last of the goddess’ legacy.

If lore ain’t your thing, then perhaps the social systems that make up games like Crowfall is. Design Consultant Raph Koster and Design Lead Thomas Blair sat down for an interview about how they’re approaching Crowfall’s social makeup.
