Crowfall reveals the tragic backstory of its trees of life

13

“In every world and age, storytellers argue the mystery of Gaea’s death. Who is the villain? What was the cause? Every bard sings a different tale, yet the end is the same: Gaea died: her blood scattered, her divinity spilled.”

The story of Crowfall’s Trees of Life begin with the death of a goddess, Gaea. In a new lore piece, the team explains that while the reason behind Gaea’s demise is unknown (although quite bloody), the result was that her tree “sisters” drank up her blood and became a faint echo of Gaea’s former power.

While these trees will no doubt have a role to play in the game as a force against the Hunger, their fate looks all but sealed. That borrowed power will eventually fade and vanish, erasing the last of the goddess’ legacy.

If lore ain’t your thing, then perhaps the social systems that make up games like Crowfall is. Design Consultant Raph Koster and Design Lead Thomas Blair sat down for an interview about how they’re approaching Crowfall’s social makeup.

Samizdat Hurbster Can’t fathom this. I may not care, but lore sure is a big deal for games like LoL, SMITE, and Overwatch… people care because they want to be sold on something that has more depth than just stabbing people within the pointy end before they stab you. It’s a marketing tool if nothing else.

Samizdat Translation: He doesn’t like PvP, and he NEEDS the rest of the world to hear his dumb opinion.

People are not going to care. It’s wasted.

Sad, dark and beautiful. Thought I am not fan of ‘dark’ still delightful.

In fact lore is good enough for a story-driven game.

I believe this lore is also the tidbit that is supposed to explain why the Druid class has to switch between healing and dpsing because too much healing will cause them to explode.

There was a tidbit in the “Meet the Druid” piece they wrote mentioning this:

http://crowfall.com/en/news/meet-the-druid/

“The Druid is a lot more versatile then your traditional PvE firehose healer. When we were designing her power kit and thinking about her thematically, having two trays made the most sense. (Todd will go into the lore at a later point but it is all tied up with the Gaea the Earth Mother being dead and as a result the Druids have a much more difficult time harnessing the power of Earth Magic.)”

So  for anybody who wants to find some meaningful in-game connections to this bit of lore, there you go.

Agreed. If it enhances the game and adds context to why we’re fighting I am all for it.
