Happy birthday, classic Guild Wars

36

Classic Guild Wars turned 11 years old this week, and I’m sorry to say that by the time you read this, the in-game party will already have ended. But! YouTuber WoodenPotatoes did a modern unboxing video of the classic Guild Wars trilogy’s collector editions that should satisfy your nostalgia. Even if you’re not a Guild Wars fan, you still may find the flip-through of mid-2000s NCsoft catalogues a treat. Plus, you gotta see 12-year-old Colin Johanson talk on the Nightfall making-of video. Memories.

Telos_ It’s more like a MMO-ish looking Diablo kind of game… it was great.

breetoplay And now I realized that commenting on a Friday after a few drinks (before leaving work, SO PROFESSIONAL!) isn’t the best.

First you hit me with the idiot standby “rose colored glasses” bit then you tell someone to shut up because they’ve “only” played 100 hours?

lol

Only 100 hours ? Everyone knows you need to play it for 2 years straight before you are allowed to criticise it…

Guild Wars was and still is an epic game! I know WoW had the real MMO thing to it, but it never reached the level of Guild Wars for me.

Telos_ I don’t quite know what you mean by “it had no chance” against WoW, etc.
GW1 was an enormously successful and popular game. It was certainly not a failure.
ArenaNet’s decided to mothball the original game, replacing it with GW2. I still think GW1 was a fundamentally better game than GW2 (and I enjoyed both games), and even now I’d rather play a new campaign for GW1 than either WoW or EQ2.

Telos_ I get including WoW, but… EQII? EQII peaked at 300k subs and didn’t really make a wave at all. GW1 sold millions of boxes.
