Nostalrius admins to meet with WoW execs

Earlier this week, Blizzard responded to calls for a vanilla World of Warcraft server by suggesting it wouldn’t do a vanilla server but would consider “pristine” servers. Buried in the missive was a note that Blizzard had been in contact with the Nostalrius emulator crew, whose shutdown under legal pressure sparked the wider gaming community’s renewed interest in classic servers to begin with. “They obviously care deeply about the game, and we look forward to more conversations with them in the coming weeks,” J. Allen Brack wrote.

It now looks as if one of those conversations is happening sooner rather than later.

So Blizzard invites the Nostalrius team into territory, where they are affected by US law and Blizzard’s lawyers? Just like Valve invited the guy from Germany, who leaked the HL2 source code, for a “job interview” (they wanted to catch him on US ground)? Ok.

Sorenthaz BritoBruno Oleg Chebeneev Remember, it’s not just Nostalrius who put in the effort for the code. The emulation community is a pretty big one and a lot of people chipped into it over the years. Nostalrius just happened to be a biggest private server.

Dreema spoilofthelamb Sorenthaz I’m sure they have the code, but a system like WoW is going to be a complicated mass of interactions between client code, server code (multiple different server-side applications I would think), database schema, database configuration, network configuration, build tools, interactions with common battle.net authentication, etc. etc. etc.

I’m sure they could yoink the source code for version 1.12 (or whatever) out of their source control system. But that would only be the first of a very long series of steps involved in getting a server up and running.

spoilofthelamb Dreema Sorenthaz A Blizzard rep once claimed the old code was gone, but I think that was a lie. In that post from J Allen Brack, he didn’t say anything about the code being gone at all, which you’d think would be the first thing he’d have said if it was true. No, they’re now claiming “technical difficulties”.

Does anyone really believe that a company as large as Blizzard didn’t think to keep even a single copy of the code around? Seems pretty unlikely.

Dreema Sorenthaz I can actually believe that they’ve overwritten original vanilla source code for servers – no one expected wow to be as big of a success as it was, and I think blizzard used absolutely everything to try to get more servers online to meet the unprecedented demand. With no experience in MMOs and a frantic need to get new servers online, archiving more than what was necessary to revert a bad patch probably wasn’t a priority. After all – if the new servers work and have more functionality, why bother? There’s little financial incentive for an archive, and no motivation at the time to spend time on it when you have hundreds of thousands of people in the queue to try out your game.

IMHO, best case scenario for everyone would be:
1. Blizzard hires those guys to, with help from their own internal programmers, create an official private server software, while changing the client to allow it to connect to said private servers. Those private servers would require the player to be connected to Battle.net in order to login, and would further have the same requirements as the official ones for content access (AKA be subscribed to WoW in order to level beyond 20, and have purchased an expansion in order to access that expansion’s content).

2. In time implement in the client and the official private servers support for both server mods and server-pushed client mods (so players connecting to a modded private server automatically get everything they need to play on it), as well as allowing those mods to change things that can’t be changed on a regular server (such as making possible for a mod to restore the talent trees).

That would allow private servers to offer a customized experience while making sure Blizzard is getting paid and no piracy is happening. And it also would make those private servers authorized uses of Blizzard’s IP, preventing their existence from diluting it (which was their reasoning for closing Nostalrius down).
