Final Fantasy XI celebrates 14 years of operation

Spizzear.

It’s been 14 years since Final Fantasy XI launched in Japan, and while the august game might be slowing down a bit, it sure isn’t stopping. The game’s last version update took place last week, and now there are a whole pile of things to do for the game’s 14th anniversary, starting with a new anniversary celebration giving players the chance to befriend crabs. You fought them for ages to level up, and now they shuttle you to your destinations; it’s a bit like the circle of life.

This year’s anniversary celebration also includes a new round of the Mog Bonanza lottery and the usual adventurer appreciation moogles fluttering into the cities to celebrate your accomplishments. If you’ve got a long-standing love of Vana’diel and its inhabitants, it’s a perfect time to pop in, remember old times, and maybe party with a crab or two along the way in the game that has a “maintenance mode” more active than some non-maintenance titles.

Even after all these years, this game still looks great and has some of the best armor designs. I miss Vana’diel. I could go back, but thats the nostalgia talking and I know all my friends don’t play anymore either which was a HUGE thing for FFXI and why it kept me for 6+ years.

I still sub.   I love the mages of this game.  I read a few articles have hollowed out jobs.  Trying to make one person do all, or make smaller party sizes.  Even on this website.  Thief, for loot, pullers, debuffers, sleepers, and such.  They also let mages do more then magic.  Weapons meant something.

They had systems in place fourteen years ago that even modern mmos have issues with today.  World bosses 21:00 hour spawns anyone?  One hour rotations for so many hours.  Why games like archeage couldn’t of done this for daily events to meet everyone’s needs is beyond me.

What other game promotes parties for world bosses?  Even  now with trust you can see how many players it takes to take down a elite mob.  And how many quest, REM weapons, armor I looking at you.  These could take months or years to complete.

Now days its empty in MMOS. solo player kills a mob, and whatever reward they want they want it in days or hours not weeks or months.    This MMO I played, never touched wow.  Seeing the direction mmos have gone, it makes me sad less games are like this.

No other game to date has made cool jobs like blue mages, puppetmasters, geomancers, rune fencers, dancers.  Nope they to busy with rangers, thieves, blak mages heal and tank.  ll standard.  I want more ffxi, but for next generation.

I don’t think you could have more clearly called out WoW without straight up saying “more active than WoW”…
