Age of Conan celebrates its eighth anniversary

Happy birthday, dear lizards.

Age of Conan has turned eight years old, which means that if it were human it would be about time for it to start sending off applications to college. (That’s eight years old, right? I think that one is eight.) That means it’s time to celebrate, and the game is doing just that, starting with a new Zingarian Swamp Beast pet offered to all players who log on between May 20th through May 29th. If you need a white lizard to follow you around as you adventure in the game, this should solve all of your needs.

Players can also purchase a Hoard that is itself a Hoard of Hoards, which combines all of the Hoards into a single cheaper Hoard that you can buy at once. There’s also the promise of a membership revamp coming soon, along with a new subscription reward system, although it didn’t quite make it for the anniversary. Or you could just complain about the festivities on the forums. That’s almost as much fun, right?

So here’s to eight years of Age of Conan, and may it have an even better year once it turns nine and would be legally allowed to name pets. (That’s nine years old, right?)

poordevil Fact of the matter is, it’s too little too late. They had their chance to keep up with the big boy F2P’s and they squandered it. One expansion since launch? Followed by one little piece of DLC ( white coast ) added a while ago? Driving non-sub players away with no AA’s, insane gold limit, no “premium” designation loosening restrictions for those who’ve spent money on the game, even the ones who were subbed before it even went F2P? Not even unlock options in the store to remove gold cap, give AA access, etc. They completely and totally gimped themselves from the get-go as any sort of F2P contender in the market of even 5 years ago, much less todays market.
They’re down to one laggy, nearly dead PvE server and one complete joke of a PvP server. No amount of F2P revamp is going to help them now, they’re in Wildstar territory. Limping along. Sure, the game is “profitable” according to their investor reports , which I’m sure have been massaged by transferring some TSW revenue to AoC to cover any losses ( easily done and a common strategy of companies with multiple products  ), along with the fact it’s easy to make money when you’re not spending it on development ( gotta love all the cancelled years long promises like the crafting revamp so they don’t have to pay for that dev time ).

If they decide to open up godslsyer for free, which Funcom may do, how are they going to make up for all the sub money lost? It is the only steady income the game has left. They would have to.make that money up somehow. The change might introduce an aggresive pay to win cash shop into the game, or some other annoying way to make money. I am thinking about what would be best for the game, keeping godslayer subscription, or opening up free access to godslayer. I have this idea that to free up godslayer would alter the game in a drastic and bad way following some kind of attempt to keep a cash flow happening.

poordevil Funny. Everquest, Everquest 2, SWtoR, ESO, and even THE SECRET WORLD ( <—-hey, LOOK AT THAT ), etc all started as sub games too. And when they became F2P/B2P, they all still give access to expansions/dlc you buy while subbed when you drop to F2P. So yeah, you’re argument is moot.

poordevil I disagree. I feel if you purchased it like myself, that they just edit their database that you can access it per account. It is cvalled customer servie.

I do wish that they Funcom would add new height maps with content to the AoC world. I have gone through all the content over the years and hit a wall for PvE content within the game that I have always loved. It must be an economic issue.

Okay I am going to stir the pot here regarding this business of being locked out of the godslayer expansion. AoC launched as a subscription only game. To access any of the content you had to subscribe. When godslayer launched AoC was still a subscription game. Everyone understood that after purchasing the expansion you needed a subscription to access it. That has never changed. You have always needed to subscribe to access the godslayer expansion and you do to this day. Funcom is under no obligation to make it free. It would be a nice gesture, maybe even a smart business decision, but it is not an obligation.

Yes I have seen Frazzetta influence fighting those Frost Giants in Ymir’s Pass. I was knee deep in snow, on a slope, swinging my sword against two of them. And there it was, on my monitor,Frank’s painting!

Now there is a man that knows his Conan literature! I never was even aware of Conan outside of the Arnie movies before playing AoC. Then I picked up one of the trilogy books of Howard’s original works, Bloody Crown of Conan, to get up to speed on the lore. That got me Going! Went ahead and picked up the other two, The Conquering Sword of Conan and The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian. All three are laviously illustrated. My favorite art work is in Bloody Crown of Conan, featuring Gary Gianni.
