RuneScape marks anniversary of a somber player massacre with… another massacre

For some, the pain of one of the most infamous events in RuneScape’s history will never go away. For others, it’s something that they’d like to revisit from time to time.

We speak of the Falador Massacre that happened 10 years ago on 6/6/6, during which a glitch in the construction skill code allowed some players to retain the ability to fight other players in a largely PvP-free world. Given the power to slaughter their fellow players without direct recrimination, a massacre followed. These unstoppable attackers went on an hour-long rampage, causing others to permanently lose gold and items until the mods arrived.

While the Falador Massacre was a black eye on the game back in 2006, RuneScape has since embraced the legacy of the event, going so far to even work it into game lore. To mark the 10th anniversary of the massacre, Jagex has activated a special recreation of the event on two of its worlds (111 and 666). If this sounds intimidating, don’t worry: Participation is both completely optional and risk-free — unlike the original.
