What’s the perfect way to get ready for Shroud of the Avatar’s summer pseudo-release? Why, by cracking open a brand-new prequel novel, of course!

The Sword of Midras: A Shroud of the Avatar Novel came out today, co-written by Tracy Hickman and Richard Garriott. “Aren Bennis is a Captain in the Obsidian Army who has seen enough of what a world without Virtue looks like and is willing to do whatever it takes to establish a lasting peace,” the description reads. “But after finding a magical sword that only he can wield, a sword his trusted scout, Syenna, claims is a blade once used by the legendary Avatars, Aren is thrown into a far more unfamiliar battle.”

This novel is the first of a projected series of three novel tie-ins with the upcoming fantasy game. It’s available as a hardcover or for Kindle, although you’ll probably have to wait a little while if you want the paperback edition.
