The Daily Grind: What’s the longest leveling grind in an MMORPG?

They're fun guys! Get it because... you know what, yeah, you get it.

I really, really do not like long leveling grinds.

Let me rephrase. I don’t mind long leveling paths where the levels don’t actually mean much in the game, when time-to-level stays roughly the same and where the curve is very shallow. You can have a cap of 500, but if it flies by, and if a level 50 isn’t that far apart in power from a 450, that doesn’t bug me because it tells me the game revolves around getting players into content instead of around slowing down players and gating fun.

So when I pose today’s Daily Grind question to you — what’s the longest leveling grind in an MMORPG — don’t tell me which game allows you to level the highest. That’s arbitrary. What I wanna know is which one takes the absolute longest in terms of time played.

I have a feeling it’s going to be an older game — maybe EverQuest or Vanguard — but then I look at my Provocation skill in Ultima Online and realize I’ve been chipping away at getting it to 120 for literally years. What’s your take?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
