League of Legends’ overhauled Ryze lands on the test server

League of Legends character Ryze has had so many do-overs that even the Riot Games copywriter can’t remember whether it’s been three or four. Last year’s rework was meant to give the character “windows of power,” but here we are again with another rework sitting pretty on the public test server. Why? He was too hard to learn, too strong in expert hands, and too confusing an opponent for newbies.

“With the last set of changes, we didn’t fix that,” Riot admits. So everything from his skills and animations to his sound effects have been rethought — even his feet have been nerfed, Reddit noted. But he won’t feel like an entirely new character. “Ryze is about combos, and this rework isn’t changing that,” writes the studio. “At his core, the Rune Mage is still a mean purplish-blue dude who uses dynamic combinations of spells to lay the whoopass on his opponents.”

The new gameplay videos are tucked below.
