Guild Wars 2 now allows guilds to memorialize their fallen members

Buried at the bottom of the recent Guild Wars 2 patch notes and presented entirely without hoopla was a note about new monuments now available in the game.

“A new guild upgrade is being introduced called Guild Hall Monument Decorations that will be available from the Guild Market once your guild has obtained the Guild Hall Decorations Merchant 2 upgrade,” it reads. Those decorations would be the Basic Grave Marker, Basic Signpost, Basic Commemorative Statue. You can probably see where we’re going with this.

“These three new decorations are monuments—decorations that have a custom player inscription. When placing a monument, you’ll be prompted to enter the inscription, which can be up to 140 characters in length. Once placed, the inscription can be read by interacting with the monument. To change an inscription, the monument must be removed and replaced. Guilds can only have a total of 50 monuments placed in their guild hall at one time. Placing and removing monuments requires a new permission: Monument Decorator. Note that the Clear Decorations button, enabled by the Remove All Decorations permission, will also remove monuments.”

Players have already thanked and been acknowledged by ArenaNet on Reddit. It’s worth noting that the nicest memorials aren’t cheap (almost 100g), and small groups without advanced halls need not apply, but even still, this is more than virtually any other MMORPG has ever done in terms of giving players full power over memorializing their fallen.
