The Daily Grind: Which historical era would make for a compelling MMO?

To tell the truth, the whole concept of The Black Death turns me off. It’s not the grim atmosphere but the seeming glee in rolling around in the mud, pus, and corpses of the past that makes me wonder who thought this was a good idea. Oh, I probably wouldn’t like the idea even if it were an imaginary fantasy contemporary, but there’s something extra-repulsive about using one of the darkest times in human history as a playground for macabre tourists.

That said, history is full of inspiring and exciting stories, figures, movements, and discoveries. It’s certainly not a terrible idea to plumb textbooks and the History Channel for ideas. There’s a lot of potential among those dry dates and roll calls of ancient figures.

What do you think? What era would make for a compelling MMO? Would you play a stone age survivor, an Egyptian scientist, a World War I spy, or something else entirely?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
