Update: PWE has confirmed to Massively OP by email that the 12 million players refers to registrations.

Neverwinter has dinged up to 12 million players, according to a report on VentureBeat this morning.

The site has posted PWE’s stats: 12 million players across PC, PS4, and Xbox One, breaking down to 7 million on PC, 3 million on Xbox One, and 2 million PlayStation 4, where it launched only in July.

Xbox One counted 1.6 million players in May of 2015 following its March 2015 launch, meaning the playerbase on that platform has nearly doubled in that time.

It was not made immediately clear whether the 12 million are total lifetime free-to-play registrations or active players within a certain period of time; we suspect the former. We have reached out to PWE to clarify the full extent of the stat and will update when we know more.

Update: PWE’s official press release reveals more stats as well as an infographic, which uses the phrase “are playing” for the PS4 stat but is ambiguous about the cross-platform stat.
