Following the announcement that Amazon Game Studios is working on multiple online games, one of them a massively multiplayer sandbox called New World, players began speculating… well, about everything, but one round of speculation caught my eye. As MOP reader Siphaed pointed out, Amazon is encouraging would-be players to “pre-order” New World as a way of signing up for release information, with a pre-order price of $0. I did it without thinking.
But the pre-order “price,” coupled with Amazon’s digital content price guarantee, has led players to speculate that the game won’t have a buy-to-play box fee attached to it, that it might have a subscription — or none at all.
Do you think we can read anything into the game’s business model based on the Amazon pre-order? What business model do you want to see for Amazon’s New World?
