The Daily Grind: How much information should accompany an expansion announcement for an MMO?

Sorry, miss, you're just not as curious.

It goes without saying that I am happy about Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. But I am also kind of annoyed that the expansion’s announcement is being spread out in such a maddening fashion. Instead of just saying “yes, one of the new jobs is Red Mage” or even “this many new jobs will be in the expansion,” Naoki Yoshida simply all but outright said that Red Mage was coming and then… stopped. Which means that most of the announcement consisted of things you could largely guess from “new expansion” right away.

At the same time, there’s also a case to be made for having some surprises; as much as I like World of Warcraft: Legion, its feature list was a known commodity a year or so before the expansion was actually out. Not much changed there. So today, I turn this question over to you, the readers. How much information should accompany an expansion announcement for an MMO? Should it be most of what’s coming, a bare taste of what’s next, or somewhere in between? Which expansion announcements (just the initial announcement, mind) hit the balance just right, which ones revealed too much, and which ones said too little?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
