The Daily Grind: When is an MMO not worth playing?

One common question that I see pop up across various MMORPG subreddits is a variation on, “Is this game still worth playing? Should I come back to it now or look for more fertile territory?”

I get what’s being asked here. MMOs ask a lot of a player’s time and effort, and many players evaluate whether a game is worth that. Looking at the server population, the publicity (or lack thereof), how much active development is going on, and if there might be a possibility that the game could go belly-up in the near future are all variables that can go into making the decisions to dive into or pass on a game.

So when is an MMO not worth playing? What’s the threshold for you to say, no, it’s just too uncertain, too abandoned, or even too old?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
