World of Tanks had a superbowl commercial, and it’s… something else

Well... huh.
So there was a World of Tanks commercial during the Superbowl. That’s a thing that actually happened. And you can watch it just below, if you want to. And then you can scroll back up here, because… well. All well and good for the commercial to exist, yes, but then you have to consider what’s in the actual commercial.

On the one hand, it’s telling about how ubiquitous video games have become in 2017 that a commercial for one can be shown during the Superbowl. It’s kind of surreal, on some level. This is now a mainstream hobby, even when it comes to online-only games like World of Tanks. On the other hand… well, look, just jump on down and watch the actual commercial. There’s no better way to explain it. It’s short, you’ve got time.

Looks like a Rockstar type of commercial, from GTA.

I love it, LOL.
Pro sports are such hypocrites. They pretend to be “family” friendly then show erectile dysfunction and alcohol ads the whole broadcast. “Ask your doctor if you’re healthy enough for sex. Seek emergency treatment if you experience an erection lasting more than 4 hours or there is risk of permanent injury”, blah blah blah. It’s embarrassing for most of the people watching and completely inappropriate for anything that ever in its wildest dreams imagined itself as family entertainment.
Or maybe they just meant “making family” entertainment. *cough cough*

I don’t know what is family friendly about violent impact between human beings, overall. All cultures need it however, tis better than the Roman Coliseum. At least the gladiators in this culture are paid.

WoT aside… heard this somewhere: Given that we are now spending far more on cosmetic surgery and erectile dysfunction than on mental health soon we will have an entire generation of elderly people with perky boobs and magnificent boners but absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

Kinda crazy to me that F2P games like the and *snorts* Evony (which I honestly didn’t know still existed) and a MMO like ESO get Superbowl commercials, but I don’t think we had a single one from a major developer/publisher. Yeah, there was the Switch commercial, but that’s hardware, not software.

Unless I totally missed a commercial for a big AAA game somewhere.

World of Tanks crushes most AAA titles in revenue!

Not really? I mean, the most recent numbers I can find are $217M Euro in 2012, $6.1M Euro of which was profit. I’m sure they’re pulling in higher numbers now that they’re on more platforms and all, but I’d be surprised if it was a huge bump from the 2012 revenue.

That puts it well behind most major AAA franchises like Call of Duty/Battlefield/Asscreed installments etc. on a 1:1 basis, and overall as publishers they’re wwwwwaaaaayyyyy behind Activision etc.

I’m not downplaying how much money they make off of the game, they do super well. But it’s just kinda funny to see mobile and F2P games making major spends on the Superbowl (and a MMO expansion!) while the “big boys” sit it out.

uhm.. it only came out in 2010, so 2012 revenue being over 200 million is pretty damn impressive for what is pretty much their first game. It has since amassed over 9 million players, released on consoles, has a mobile offshoot that’s apparently popular for some reason…

In 2015 they made 450 million off of World of Tanks PC alone. which is more than half of what WoW brought in that year and more than 100 mio more than what CoD did. And it doesn’t include WoT consoles, WoT Blitz on mobile and Steam, World of Warships, etc.

Wargaming ARE one of the big boys now.

Erm, CoD generated $550M in 3 days in 2015. I’d have to hunt down post-launch numbers, but between additional game/merchandise sales and DLC, I wouldn’t be surprised if they came close to (or did) hit $1B.

Yeah, Wargaming have a lot of money and make some serious spends, but they’re not really competing on the same level as the major publishers are. They’re still below them, though they’re on the top of that heap beneath the big boys.

Where did you find the $450M number, by the way? I couldn’t turn anything up with a quick Google search : /

it’s from Superdata. According to them btw, World of Tanks users are spending 3.5 $ on average per player per month. That’s more than twice as high as League of Legends :D And I was just counting the current Call of Duty.

P.S.: To be fair though, in 2016 they were overtaken by Overwatch ;)

You are confusing revenue and profit.

CoD is far more expensive to produce.

Wonder how long (um no pun intended!) it took them to agree on that name Stiffedra. ROFL

It’s appropriate that they drove through with a Sherman, as IRL it really was pretty much the ‘disappointing limp dick’ of main combatant tanks of WW2.

Better than the T34 which seems oddly respected. America just can’t (even still) grasp how its love of gasoline powered muscle cars didn’t pay off on the battlefield until about 1950… nobody could deal with the Tiger 1 mostly, and the Tiger 2 was death on two treads compared to all but late models and prototypes
