Paragon introduces K-pop-themed Shinbi hero

Epic’s MOBA Paragon revealed a new playable hero this week: Shinbi, a K-pop themed melee superstar who’s possibly a reference to pop star ShinB from GFRIEND, which incidentally hit MMO news this week once already thanks to its Valentine promo for Elsword. My apophenia, ahhhh!

“A world famous pop star known for summoning Spirit Wolves during her performances, Shinbi is a deceptive melee assassin who uses her wolves to dazzle her enemies and rip them to shreds in battle,” says Epic, rattling off her themey skills: Rushing Beat, Line Tempo, Circle Rhythm, and All-Kill!. She officially launches February 21st.

Kotaku has a grand roundup of some of the criticisms of the character already, which basically boil down to melee sucks, why more girls though, what’s K-pop, D.Va clone, and this is totally breaking my immersions in world lore we don’t know anything about. So, you know. The usual.

This isn’t bad, some of it is quite authentic, but her clothing is too skimpy and the music video is too surreal. The strong dancing moves, music and vocals are all perfectly good representations of a kpop idol though.

It is nice to see companies create characters that represent popular or historic culture of another country. Far too often we just get minor stereotypical representations of westerners.

Meh kinda cliche already.

But wait! How about instead a MALE k-pop hero?

I kind of like this, though I noticed that some of the facial animations veer into the uncanny valley territory.

“some of the facial animations veer into the uncanny valley territory”…

Eh, I don’t mind a K-Pop star as a new hero, but that “announce” video is just bad… Feels like it was quickly thrown together by a 12-year-old kid who spent a couple of days learning Adobe Premiere and UE4.

How the hell is a 3rd person melee in a moba in any way similar to a 1st person tank in a shooter?

Thematically, rather than mechanically.

I don’t really get the Dva comparisons though. I mean, I kinda do, but it’s more that both Dva and Shinbi are very obvious efforts on the part of both studios to create characters that would be attractive to the Korean market – a big market for MOBA’s/online shooters. Shinbi and Dva have little in common outside of their shared Korean background.

I went to the source and actually there’s exactly 1 D.Va mention and it’s filed under awkward and it’s actually D.Va x Gal Gadot.

S. Korea as a theme is slightly less vague than female.

I feel like people are hamming on her just for being Korean. I mean, come on guys, I’m Korean, so that totally makes me the same as D.Va and Shinbi, right?

It’s such a super silly complaint.

Honestly, the roster of this game feels a lot like the roster of Killer Instinct: just a bunch of random, crazy ideas bunched together for the heck of it. :D
