ARK is abandoning the claiming of abandoned dinos

One way survivors have been able to nab new dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved is by claiming abandoned tames when their ownership timer expires. That mechanic is being itself abandoned: On the game’s Reddit forum, Studio WildCard’s community manager confirmed that the practice of claiming of abandoned dinos is going away. Now when players leave servers their tamed dinosaurs will all just despawn/die when the timer runs out. This change, in conjunction with a 400 tamed dino cap for tribes, is meant to help server performance.

The idea was met with mixed feelings. Some folks enjoy the sport of camping out and snagging prized  dinos when they become available, especially on PvE servers; others welcome the reduction in lag from server load. Could other options get the same desired result of less dinosaurs, such as giving owners the ability to release/remove unwanted dinos (short of setting them lose to slowly die)? One commentor offered this scenario as a compromise:

I think it should be a 50% chance the dino reverts back to wild and aggressive. Imagine the hilarity of watching people stand around arguing over who is going to claim that badass giga, and then the timer expires and it chomps everyone of them.

In response to concerns about trading dinosaurs, WildCard clarified that players could still actively unclaim their tames for others to claim.

I agree that it should go back to wild and untamed. But it says that server load is why they’re dissolving and that is probably sorta final.

This is rather silly. Just treating the symptoms and not the cause yet again. The more popular a server becomes, the more the server diminishes in sustainability. Its a design contradiction that is made worse by Ark’s official servers(and not a small number of player run unofficial servers hosted on rinky dink hosts) being on server slices with inferior hardware for the job. The 400 dino cap and this unclaim timer removal are just peripheral grasping at straws, really.

I’d normally agree, but we’re not paying a monthly fee nor are there micro transactions. So, while its completely true that their servers suck, its also understandable.

Now, once they start selling lockboxes with a chance to drop an instantly loyal raid dino, then its fair game.

I think it is a fairly weak, disingenuous argument to make that because its buy to play we should excuse the condition of not just their servers but the design of the game on any server due to sustainability issues. Its like advertising and selling a car, then sending the person on their way with dry rotted tires that blow out after a few miles. Your stance would be well there was no monthly maintenance fee or similar so it sucks but its understandable.

There is a considerable price difference between a car and Ark. If i bought a workable car for the same price, I wouldn’t care what state the tires are.

Joking aside, good tires or not, you do pay a maintenance fee for a car. Its just in lump sums instead of monthly.
