One Shots: Avenging angel

When you push a player too far, commit too many crimes, and flaunt your evil with one of those tacky pre-battle speeches, you’re going to get a face full of avenging angel.

Tyler, take it away! “No matter how many of The Secret World’s world bosses I fight (and I have fought a lot; I may have a problem), I never get tired of seeing the swarms of players that rush in to take them down, the riot of different outfits and ability effects, the massive bosses withering away under the combined fire, the sheer epic mayhem of it all. Add the spectacular effects from ultimate abilities, and you have an endless source of amazing screenshot fodder.”

Welcome to an all-email submissions edition of One Shots! Remember kids, when you email a screenshot and a story, you get to cut to the front of the line!

“Due to hearing about Age Of Conan going into maintenance mode, I have been roaming around taking shots in 4k,” wrote in Boom. “I thought I would share them and see if any make the grade this week!”

Congrats Boom, you made the grade. A-plus-plus-plus! Seriously, this is one gorgeous vista!

Captain Rees Racer reporting in: “No matter how long I’ve been playing Elite Dangerous, there are certain aspects that are unnerving. Traveling between systems involves using your ship’s Frame Shift (warp/jump/light speed) Drive. Every explosive exit from this mode places you directly in the path of that system’s largest star — in its corona, no less. Whilst this enables one to sometimes necessarily scoop fuel to continue on, it nevertheless causes my heart to skip a beat, even after doing it a thousand times.”

“In the last One Shots column you asked for screenshots that unnerved us in online RPGs,” Little Bugbear said. “I literally came across myself in World of Warcraft back when I was in high school: look, name, everything. The NPC even predicted my future as I later went on to work at a bakery for awhile (NPC me and I really do love our sweets).”

Ralph the Wonder Llama blames this one on us: “I started up a new warrior in TERA last week to take advantage of the ‘Sword and Hoard’ leveling event. Then along came the One Shots challenge to give me an excuse to run around attacking monsters with my UI turned off. All in all it was an exciting week, and I’m pleased to report that obtaining screenshots like this one resulted in fewer player deaths than you might think.”

Thanks for all of the great email submissions this time around! For this week’s screenshot challenge, I want to see some pictures from the afterlife. What does it look like when you die in your MMO and have to do a corpse run? In some games, the visuals shift markedly — or you’re even taken somewhere “special.” Let’s see it!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!
