Star Citizen starts building surface outposts, continues to test Patch 2.6.2

It’s always a good day when you get to open up a new box full of fun toys to build worlds to your heart’s content. The folks behind Star Citizen are clearly enjoying themselves as they utilize a batch of new tools to build high-tech surface outposts for planets.

In the latest Around the Verse, the team discusses these “small locations” that players can visit on various worlds. These outposts are being constructed using a modular system, and once the kinks are worked out, the team will be able to make an array of them across the galaxy.

Other discussion in this episode covers the continued testing of Patch 2.6.2, the new Drake Buccaneer ship, an expansion to the QA team in Austin, and some additional work being done on the website, forum, and launcher.

Catch all of the latest developments by watching the show yourself after the jump!

I’m a backer and haven’t checked out the game for ages. Is it worth having a look?

It can’t hurt.

Probably good to pop in every now and then to see what it’s like for a major patch but unless you love to watch paint dry you’re best putting it on a backburner until it eventually releases (if it eventually releases) .

SC Alpha 2.6.3 is now Live.

– Nothing spectacular, per se, just some bug fixes that they managed and felt didn’t need to wait for the next ‘major’ release.

While I’m bummed at how long things are taking, the amount of forethought going into these systems is quite impressive. Something as “simple” as surface outposts turns into something much larger once you add in procedural generation, aging, weathering, and planet/region conditions. Most developers would make 4 or 5 different buildings and then copy/paste them everywhere and be done with it (*cough* Bioware *cough*).

Also, the new Cutlass Black is a sexy beast, and I’m glad they took the time to do a refit on it.

most developers can’t get away with the level of lazy that is bioware map design whatsoever. and even when people do criticise it in one of their games it’s blame on the engine instead of being recognize as a common trope of the studio.

it’s 2.6.3 that is on the PTU right now. it’s wide access so should be any day now possibly tonight as they like to push to live on friday nights.

no idea what .3 is supposed to add mind you, i wasn’t expecting a .3 patch at least not this soon after .2 was pushed live like last week? maybe .2 got split up and my friends that follow closely missed it.

Main thing the .3 fixes is the All Pads Full issue. I guess it was considered critical enough that it warranted another quick release.

oh yeah been running into that A LOT in 2.6. results in everyone having to leave the instance which if you’re grouping with friends can mean game over for the day unless you wanna smash your head for hours on it without luck if you don’t get in together right away.

That’s encouraging. We need places to go and visit.
