Final Fantasy XIV kicks off a new login campaign and prepares for another live letter

And that's the future. It's the future. Your future.
The second expansion for Final Fantasy XIV will be here in just about two months, and players are curious. Sure, we know a bit of the lore behind the new jobs, but what will their actual mechanics feel like? What’s happening to Blood of the Dragon? How often are we going to have to search for moogles? You can find out some of these answers (or perhaps none of them) by watching the next Letter from the Producer LIVE on April 28th, with Naoki Yoshida once again answering fan questions and discussing what’s on deck for the expansion.

Of course, if you’ve been away from the game for a bit you might be asking if you want to spend the next couple of months catching up. The good news is you don’t have to determine that just by speculation; another free login campaign has arrived, allowing former subscribers to log in for up to 96 hours until May 7th. So you can jump in, check out the changes, and then decide if you’d like to spend more time with the game as an informed player.

So its around 9 weeks till Stormblood now right? with Heavensward done and dusted and credits rolled it feels like now is when the LL’s will start talking about the actual class changes finally. As a NIN main i’m expecting a lot of simple “skill A and skill B are now Skill A+B stuff” but for thinks like MNK i’m picturing a lot of stuff becoming natural passives as long as you do your rotation right. But hopefully we will see in the live letter.

I’m tempering my expectations for this LL – there is “fine print” on the info page that says they won’t be talking about class adjustments, skills, etc., until the LL in May.

I expect more about lore (that they willing to reveal), maybe teases on raid/dungeon design and such, additional screenshots and video teases of new areas, and the Q&A portion. More of what we’ve been getting, basically, with the next LL dropping the big info on skills and class changes.

No email about the login event yet, but guess I’ll log in to see if my account is eligible over the weekend. Been considering resubbing for some dungeon farming again, recently, so this is a happy little coincidence.

I wonder why they don’t just break the barrier for prior players and give them the same trial account features?

Likely don’t have the back end designed for that yet – removing the time restriction on trial accounts is almost certainly significantly easier/less work than creating a system that lets old accounts return but with the same restrictions – not to mention the design issues to be answered since all jobs can be played on a single character, so the way WoW handles it where any given character (which are all separate, sans achievements at the account level) that is level 20 or under can be played doesn’t translate directly in terms of design, so numerous other elements of the design would have to be figured out and then implemented.

I won’t be surprised to see it arrive eventually, but it requires a bit more on the design end than WoW’s version does, so I also won’t be surprised that it will take them a while to actually get all that stuff together to implement it.
