MMORPG sandbox Arcfall is headed to Steam early access

I’m always wary nowadays when a game bills itself as a massively multiplayer sandbox gaming world, especially one that says it’s akin to “old school RPG games with modern quality,” but Arcfall appears to deserve the label.

The new MMO is currently listed on Steam as an early access title still in pre-alpha, but it isn’t formally launched or buyable just yet. Developer Neojac says it’s a “social” game, with open world non-instanced housing, a player-driven economy, crafting and farming, mounts, banking, resource harvesting, a classless skill-based progression system, and an incomplete map. Guilds, factions, dungeons, ships, player islands, and PvP (to complement the full-loot death) are still on the way, though there are apparently PvE-only zones too.

Early access is expected to last “the better part of this year,” with beta by the end of 2017. Founder packs are available on the official site; Neojac says that early buyers can access the game through that portal while Steam’s rollout continues.

Neojac should sound familiar to hardcore MMO fans; that’s the studio building MMO Neo’s Land on the Atavism platform, also of its own design. Neo’s Land’s last public update was in December of last year.

First I have ever seen anything about this game but I have to say I had to double check and make sure this was not the same people making Albion. So much of the graphics look exactly like that game that it really makes me curious. I mean just that clip of the mounted player running through town on his horse looks exactly like Albion.

Yeah they suck to me, pandering to the MOBA mouse clicker crowd or trying for the nostalgia I don’t know. But real MMO ( not that lobby bs ) gaming overall these past few years is going in the wrong direction.

Real talk – have any of the sandboxes that have launched in Early Access, MMO or survival, even actually like…launched? Because every one of the bigger/higher profile ones I can think of off the top of my head are all still in Early Access, upwards of 4 YEARS (sup DayZ still in alpha!).

DarkFall ROA has official launch day May 5th, so ask again then :)

Some have, at least in some form. That said, in terms of actually fully finished development and all… not yet.

DayZ is abandoned for all intent and purposes, but many of the others that hold any promise are only at the 2-3 year point and still getting updates (which is honestly not that far out for time to develop, most games get 3-5 years put in.)

Most AAA games see 4-6 years. The thing is that we all see that as more transparent now, since everything is announced at the concept stage anymore.

The new Darkfall, and The Long Dark (I know, odd since it isn’t multiplayer at this time) are supposed to be in official launch soon, with a number of others slated for later this year.

It seems to me that everyone and their grandmother will launch a pvp/survival sandbox these days…

Its much cheaper than a pve sandbox or themepark and the most important thing is that no one will accuse you for a wow clone or “catering to carebears”…

Reader
Jonny Sage

Thats what happens when people make themeparks for 10 years.

Reader
Robert Mann

More appropriately, that’s the follow the sales trend.

It just happened to be wow and themeparks for a long time, followed by mobas.

To me PVP and Sandbox are the easy way out. You don’t have to continue lore. You don’t have the content demands of a PVE game. It’s cheaper and Lazy. The content is PVN(Players Vs Noob).
