Valiance Online muses about a sidekicking system

Sidekicking and mentoring were among the best and most-used features in City of Heroes, but will one of its spiritual successors take a cue from these systems? On Valiance Online’s forums, the team is asking for fan feedback about a hypothetical system that would allow players of different levels to enjoy the game together. Maybe it’s nothing, but there’s a chance this could be a hint that the Valiance team is working on its own system behind the scenes.

Speaking of the project’s progress, the team posted its weekly development roadmap, now with a new column specifically for the task of tracking the game’s movement toward a private alpha. According to the chart, both systems and content for the alpha are complete, while coding, art, and QA are still in the works.

“The latest Unity update has made major changes to the handling of the user interface,” the team reported. “Instead of waiting on Unity to release an update to support old setups, we’re recording the affected parts in game.”

I honestly don’t get how the system hasn’t been implemented in every single MMO with a leveling system. It’s absolutely brilliant.

Sidekicking/Mentoring is such a simple and elegant solution to a distinct problem that I think many developers mistakenly believe *isn’t* a problem.

Honestly, sidekicking up and down was one of the more defining features of COH and I wholly enjoyed it.

Why is this even a question? Copy the CoH system outright, 100%, done deal.

I’d take the Champions Online version, because Cryptic added one useful convenience feature to CoH sidekicking: They created a separate “team champion” role just for level scaling. The team leader could pick any team member’s level without giving up the leadership role.

That would certainly be a nice extra feature!

A City of Heroes tribute without a sidekicking system is no City of Heroes tribute at all.

I loved that feature. Anything to encourage teaming and remove barriers.

Sure the veteran characters can always make new characters but why not bring the noobs along on a level 30 mission? Why not bring that level 50 veteran on one of your noob’s level 10 mission?

Hell, yes!

Mentoring systems that work for both players can be a very good way for an established player to invite a buddy and help them advance without having to roll a level 1 and develop alongside them.
I would vote YES.
