The Daily Grind: What would you like to see done with MMO pets?

A little while ago, I was amused by a story about how a sort-of pet for World of Warcraft’s sort-of housing was able to be moved to the current city hub via effort on the player’s part. It struck me as funny, as that game has more actual vanity and combat pets than you can shake a stick at, yet some players would put in the effort to bring Dog “home.”

Eh, who am I to judge? I love my pets in MMOs, even though most of the time all they do is trot alongside of you and clutter up dungeon runs. I enjoy the virtual companionship and being able to show off a little. I do wish they’d do a little bit more, whether it be trot around my house (in games with housing), go sell my vendor trash (Torchlight-style), or fetch me the occasional critter and drop it dead at my feet.

What would you like to see done with MMO pets? How could they become more interactive and engaging? Would you want a pet that grew up, that could be taught tricks, or one that responds to commands?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

When Wow had happiness, loyalty, leveling; You know, when they mattered. Now there an afterthought

For them to have proper gameplay functionality. Most games either have them as vanity pets, typically from the cash shop, or as a completely irrelevant part of a class, that you tend to pay zero attention to in battle. This is stupid. If you’re going to have combat pets, give players a decent set of controls and the ability to shift their main damage to the pet.

Guild Wars did this very well imo. As a ranger you could put your points into Beast Mastery and grab a hotbar full of pet abilities. You’d deal no damage yourself but the pet became lethal. Combined with a properly functioning attack, guard and follow mode, it made for fun gameplay, where you made your pet run around and fight things while trying to avoid damage to yourself.

As apridise said: Looting. I know a game which can make the pets loot, but … f2p but pay4fun.
Other things are harvesting (which is similar to looting) plants for crafting.
In games like MGSV you can use your dog to sniff out foes or let them attack (this is more a ranger pet thing and not a minipet thing).
If the game provides it, you could find treasures or other nice to find things. Depending on the minipet they could do different tasks. If there is gameplay beside running around like flying or swimming/diving you could use different pets in different situations (flying fish? :D).
Or just let them fight against each other in a minipet arena as a minigame. It shouldn’t end in a pokemon situation where you have to train your minipet most of the time because you have to do other things in an MMO as well.
If you can acquire pets in game and definitely not in a cash shop you could have pets which buff you a little bit. Something like 1% more HP or 0,5% increase in mana regeneration.

I’d like to see minipets do more things than just running alongside the owner but this involves so much more and devs have to do it right other wise it would end up bad and forgotten.

Looting, why can’t they fetch more often in mmo’s?

Would be nice if they had some sort of special emotes from pet to pet that they do randomly. Also would be cool if they had varying cosmetics so you could choose what type you want. What would be really handy is if they had some sort of functionality to them as well such as looting or being able to go off and sell for you.

Basically the BDO pet system, only minus the horrendous RNG.

Give the pets a brain larger than that of a brain-damaged cockroach.

I’d love to be able to cuddle with them or hold them or carry them or something.

More.

Just more. Many mmos dont even have pets, and those that do, are just the basics.

I want my pet to grow strong, eventually leaving my care. Get out into the world, create a legend for itself. Become a very powerful NPC. Affect the world. Kinda like How to Train Your Dragon’s Toothless.
