Dean Hall on his third attempt to build a space station sim with Stationeers

Stationeers, an upcoming multiplayer survival sim, marks Dean Hall’s (DayZ) third attempt to create a space station title. In a recent interview with PC Games N, Hall seems confident that this one will make it across the finish line.

“The other day we set a record of 28 players playing, with excellent bandwidth usage,” he says. “It was fantastic. It was the first time we’d run a playtest with a large number of players that had no major errors, so that’s putting us on the road to release.”

Hall talks about the features that are going into the game, the ones being adjusted, and the ones being left out due to resource limitations. He’s hoping that trading between stations will make its way into the game at some point, but Hall is more concerned with creating a “great core game loop” that was present in other successful early access titles like Prison Architect and Rimworld.

Stationeers is slated to come to Steam early access some time this year.

I’m still waiting for word on whether Lego is going to sue over the… well, very Lego graphics.

That and for him to get anywhere close to finished with something. Then I might consider one of his games. Maybe.

I look forward to it and am glad he isn’t shackled by Bohemia’s finicky tech to build upon.

The guy stumbled into success just making a little zombie mod for Arma 2 on the side while I think he worked on Arma 2 legit as his real job. He made Arma 2 more known for a modification quicker than Bohemia ever made Arma 2 known at all.

With his cut of the DayZ standalone sales he wants to try the indie (with money) life. That is great. Clearly, his team has stumbled their way through prototyping their first official titles. I think he is an interesting guy and I want to see what his team can do when they are ready to release something to the public.

To the DayZ whiners: Dean did his part and Bohemia’s tech people have largely been the ones responsible for the long testing period. It remains my favorite hardcore multiplayer survival sim.

To add, a lot of people still feel shafted that he left the DayZ team. However, he was only able to stay for as long as his NZ Military VISA would allow, and that time was soon to expire (nevermind being away from wife and family for so long).

Dean is not really the bad guy here. People were just far too quick to grab their pitchforks.
The dude has some really great ideas and it’s nice that he can finally try something without the limitations created inside another team’s office.

You have to be aware that he left DayZ ages ago, to start making a game called Ion. Which he presented at one of the big conventions a while back….and so…that’s also been cancelled or suspended indefinitely, and…he’s making another game.

It spans more than just DayZ now. He’s setting himself up for a reputation.

Ion was just a bunch of vague ideas and maybe concept art, as far as I was aware, so I don’t feel the loss of that idea is worth much mention. Whenever they get a game into public testing is when I start seeing if Dean and his team are able to deliver on anything with that creative freedom.

That could take ten years with numerous cancellations for all I care.

Dean Who?

Seriously, this guy just needs to go away already.

Mayb he could go hang out with Derek Smart and the 2 of them can make the greatest space game ever.

It’s hard to take any of Hall’s news updates seriously when he’s yet to finish a project officially. Either have them declared finished (since people already have to pay for one of his pet projects) and deal with release criticism, or be the guy that can’t get anything done.

Everything this guy touches is in my “call me when it’s done” list, and I mean that, I would like to check this out if it’s ever finished as it sounds like fun.
