Destiny dev admits to drawing dungeon inspiration from World of Warcraft

For all the allergies Bungie has to admitting the Destiny games are MMOs, the dev team is not shy about admitting that it drew inspiration for the shooter’s dungeons straight from one of the biggest MMORPGs of all time.

According to a recent interview, Destiny Game Director Like Smith talked about how much he loved World of Warcraft and wanted to recreate the feel and flow of that MMO’s group dynamics in Destiny’s raids.

“Taking a raid from a non-shooter and bringing it into a shooter is about translating the feelings, it’s not about actual specific mechanical translation,” Smith said. “The feelings that matter from cooperative gameplay are those around other people making things easier — it’s about being able to see the impact everyone has on the success and failure of the group.”

Smith said that the team is focused on improving some of the weaker elements of Destiny with this fall’s Destiny 2. “We want to unhide the fun of Destiny,” he said.

Wow. The new system is something special. I haven’t bothered with it until now. Aaaaanyway, having dungeons designed in the likeness of WoW’s isn’t a bad thing at all.

I don’t see why it would matter one way or the other where a game dev draws their inspiration from. Seems like a clickbait article title made to draw in the wow bashing crowd.

No wonder Destiny sucks, its a shooter WoW clone.

Not sure if this was ever fixed since the last time I played (a year + ?), but if they fix anything, I hope they fix the players basically skipping everything all the way to the boss. Maybe I’m old school but I like to do the content in full…I don’t run shit over and over like some people, but when I do run it, I like to run it legit.

Same goes for the raids. I hate (or hated) joining a raid group and standing around for 1 person to glitch whatever level we’re on…I guess thats fun for some people, but I don’t really buy into the loot grind thing anymore these days…I just play for fun and peeps keep ruining MY fun

That’s not a bad thing. WoW has some of the best dungeon of any MMO.

Now if we can get a 3rd person view option, I might be actually interested in this game.

Typo: The name is Luke Smith (in article and tags).

He used to work at 1UP.com and talk about WoW and Halo all the time. Surprise surprise he got hired by Bungie who now works with Activision Blizzard. He was even on 1UP’s WoW-focused podcast, Legendary Thread, often.

As soon as I started hearing all the comparisons between Destiny and WoW I figured he had something to do with it.

Like he said though, shooter level/raid designs are very different from a game like WoW.

The article really is a great read. He is a gamer that just stumbled into his dream job.

He orders the game, so he can open it up at home like everyone else at launch.

? Which is it Dungeons or Raids, the article seems to refer to both, which would be wierd as they are bother very different beasts.

I’m not sure I want the hassle of a raid for an open world destiny dungeon, especially as those need to be soloable as well as groupable so applying roles to somethingthat needs to be group size scalable would be problemtaic unless they are giving you bot party members or some weirdness.
