Portal Knights launches across multiple platforms

Through a portal!

It’s full steam ahead for Portal Knights, which launched yesterday on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. For those wondering if early access periods ever truly end, here’s one example of a definitive launch!

The dev team said that this is a nerve-wracking and exciting time: “You know, leaving early access is scarier than you think… What will new players think? Will our community think this is the end? So many questions! Be rest assured, just because we’ve now left early access, that doesn’t mean anything will change. Going forward, we fully intend on updating Portal Knights, like we always have done, and filling those updates with community requests.”

For those unfamiliar with the game, Portal Knights is a multiplayer RPG member of the extended Minecraft family. Players adventure through linked sandbox worlds while returning back to their own virtual homes every so often to build and craft. There are three classes available, and players can create teams of up to four to traverse these worlds. Portal Knights is priced at $20.

I see an MMORPG tag on it but the most I see is that it’s four player co-op with friends and no dedicated servers, so that’s not really an MMORPG in any way, 4 friends does not massive make. That’s not to say it doesn’t look fun and all I just hate misleading tags (although that’s a user defined tag, not a developer claim – so I do realize the people making the game didn’t actually put that down as it’s listing).

That all said why does it have news being listed here? Yes, it has the false user added MMORPG tag on it but it’s just a normal game that has 4 player co-op, not exactly what should be covered here at Massively is it?

I’m not trying to be a goat or anything, I know I can skip stuff I’m not interested in it’s just when I see a game covered here I expect that it’s at least partially MMO like in some way or the other. I mean it’s okay to cover very limited co-op stuff too if it’s a slow news day I guess, I’m just a tiny bit grumpy because seeing this here I thought it may be an actual MMO and was running to buy it when I saw that it’s not even partially an MMO… I guess it’s my own fault for assuming after seeing it here :P

I’m not going to buy in till they fix the couch co-op split screen. The UI and text is just impossible to read in split screen. It’s just horribly designed. Otherwise, my daughter and I would be playing today.

Was going to play with my 11 yr old daughter (MMO’er in training!) beside me, but would like a little more info on the game from players who may have already played? Dedicated server issue aside, is it worth two copies?

The inability to run a dedicated server is a massive oversight. With a game that has persistent world potential and building, you really need dedicated servers. Sadly …. the devs say no. Massive loss of potential.

You just convinced me not to check this game out, lol.

I would seriously wait until the devs implement a dedicated server. If they do, I would whole-heartedly recommend it.

What do you mean by dedicated server?

Currently, if you want to play with friends, and have friends log into the world you’ve all created, you need to keep the game running 24×7. If you shut down the game are all, your friends have no access too the world you’ve built …. until you start up the game again.

A dedicated server allows you to have JUST the world running in the background (preferably on a seperate PC) not taking up a player slot and not needing to run the game all the time.

It’s a basic feature of many multiplayer games.

I saw this the other day, thinking..

“WOW! Has skysaga changed it’s name???…. and they finally made it look really nice!”
Only to find out this is not skysaga…

Better be good if it’s going to beat Trove (priced at 0.00)!

Looks better then Trove but it’s a bit linear for me.

While I’d not play portal knights, not being a Trion product already makes it better in a multitude of ways.
