Ashes of Creation will let you step into the shoes of a flesh-rending monster

24

If all of Ashes of Creation’s ambitious claims come to life in the finished product, then it does’t seem like players will wont for things to do. And if adventuring, farming, and trading gets old, there’s always the opportunity to take a vacation in the skin of a monster.

Calling it “fresh to the MMO experience,” the team at Ashes of Creation says that the game’s monster play will allow players to use special coins to take over a mobile boss for a dynamic event. Both the monster attacker and player defenders are judged based on their performance, with all sorts of cosmetics as potential rewards.

In addition to the monster coin system, Intrepid Studios announced the addition of yet another stretch goal: variant spell FX if 16,000 Kickstarter backers are reached. As it stands, Ashes of Creation has raised $2.35M with the help of over 13,200 backers so far.

I really like this idea but I wonder if there is anything preventing a gank group from saving up these and raiding villages all at once. Or how about a nefarious group assisting a world event. Or maybe that’s part of the fun.

It’s not a bad idea. LOTRO has Monster Play, which is their open PvP, and it’s pretty awesome.

I’ve said many times that “endgame content” should give players the ability to play as a lower level NPC boss and make those raids / encounters more exciting and arbitrary. Perhaps even let them roam outside their normal bounds, within reason, you don’t want people showing up to complete a quest and find an “out to lunch” sign, or the boss three zones away from where it should be. But things like quests where there are actually 2 bosses, imagine if players got to inhabit them, the teamwork they’d be capable of would make the encounter a lot more interesting.

EQ did something like this a long long time ago. Not boss monsters I think, but this is hardly new or fresh.

…..are they going to stop throwing stuff to the chalkboard and start doing ANY actual work sometime soon?
no?

^ And this is how you tell everyone you are not really paying attention to the game.

Wow just ran the numbers and AoC is currently averaging $177 per backer. Even SC is only getting an average of $83 per backer. I like the idea’s for the game but not that much.

Ah let’s see..

Ashes of Creation
$2.35mil – 13k backers
Star Citizen
$150mil – 1.8mil backers

Yeah I can see how that would make sense. /s

Seems you forgot to see they got more done in 15 months then a 300 man studio and 150 million dollar budget did.

But lets just pretend they dint do anything but setup a kickstarter to scam people right ?

So the boss mob earns rewards? Because I wonder how they will prevent people gaming this to give someone the boss loot and take turns …

For players using the monster coins, simple solution would be to give rewards based on how much damage/impact you deal.

Also I think the implication is that if you successfully manage to take down a settlement or whathaveyou, players will be forced to take it back and build back up from a certain point.

CSE announced this for CU about 4 years ago…

I guessing it’s that imitation and flatter thing!

Stepping into a monster or npc isn’t new or fresh. Many of us told devs to do things like this decades ago. LOTR was perfect for this, but ignorant devs will be ignorant devs.

I always hesitate to criticize other developers, but it would be nice if some devs do what I do, credit other devs for coming up with ideas (like the three Realms for RvR which came from Kesmai’s fantastic Air Warrior) and then talk about how they are evolving the idea.

I’m sure there is a lot of nostalgia clouding my mind but my time with Kesmai’s Air Warrior 2 is still some of the best RvR experiences I have had.

Remember being part of a squadron (Joker’s Wild) and we would do air base capture runs. You would have 1-2 B-17 bombers, each of which had 4-6 people gunners and 3-5 escort fighters all taking off from a air base and flying in formation. 10-15 min after the bomber and fighters would take off you would have a couple of gooney’s take off and follow from a distance so that after the bombers destroyed the runway(maybe wrong on this one), hangers, fuel tanks and ammo depot they could drop paratroopers to take over the air field.

I maybe wrong but I’m also pretty sure there was voice chat in Air Warrior 2 as well.

DFA and the Musketeers Nicholas, those were my two main squadrons.

And my handle was Gunsmoke.

And Phantasy Star Online let you take control of the Dragon boss over 15 years ago. It’s almost like this isn’t a new thing.

Oh this wont be abused or used as a griefer’s dream tool what so ever….

Controls could be put on it. Sounds like they are already planning positive reinforcements, they could put in some negative ones too as well as flat out barriers to keep players on the intended path.

I’ll be disappointed as hell if they don’t manage to pull this stuff off. It sounds so promising and pretty much what I’ve been hoping to see in a sandbox MMO one day.

My guess is that it’ll be released, decried for exploitation/abuse/imbalance, then adjusted and rebalanced to the point that players become apathetic to the feature and call for new shiny.

Reader
Sorenthaz

Only real way I could see this potentially exploited is if people literally just give up free kills on the monster coin things so that there isn’t any real threat to a node and everyone reaps rewards from it.

Way they could maybe counter that though is the monster player(s) would only be rewarded based on how much damage and mayhem they create.

Great, now i’m wondering what sort of shoes such a creature would wear.
