Star Citizen checks in with Frankfurt studio, talks about designing the Eclipse

In this week’s rip-roaring episode of Around the Verse, the Star Citizen team checks in with the game’s Frankfurt studio. This studio has recently grown to 74 employees, which raises the question of who on this planet isn’t currently working on Star Citizen?

“We routinely visitors to the office and this month was no exception with people here from both our US and U.K. offices,” Development Director Brian Chambers said. “Most of the senior production staff from across all the offices came together in one place for their annual summit. Had some intensive meetings and discussed upcoming and ongoing plans and we found that a few days face to face without distraction can actually go a long way.”

Following an update of Chambers’ team’s progress, the episode moves on to look at the design of a stealthy bomber, the Eclipse. You can get the full effect of developer genius by watching the full episode below, or if you prefer you could always simply read the transcript via Relay.

Must admit the ship looks nice . I just hope it doesn’t end up being another of these ships they keep selling to fund the game a practice which gives rightly or wrongly that the eventual game may end up having a strong pay to win element to it .

I know it’s something that the backers of this game dispute quite vehemently but I do often wonder whether there is much objectivity in play there .

It looks like it could be good but I think I will wait for six months to a year after release when the reality of (or lack of ) pay to win becomes more apparent when people actually start experiencing the game itself .

Roger Melly… jumping on every SC article to say one single thing: P2W…

But… It is not. Because:

* Yes people starting day one with ships pledged that require weeks/months to get in game do have an advantage… this is an advantage of time and it is fair that people with very little time do contribute to help create this crowfunded game.
* yes those ships have zero advantage versus the same ships bought with in game credits.
* Yes this advantage will fade out after few weeks/months as soon players get them with in game credits.
* Yes selling ships is the only way to gather enough funds as just >nobody< will buy a plant or an in game jacket 250$.

You can repeat P2W ad nauseum man :)

Well, you really didn’t refute his claims.

Reader
Joe Blobers

Okay so let’s make it even more clearer: I refute them :)

Reader
Roger Melly

Essentially you seem to be saying that it is fair because people with less time but more money to spend can buy ships that it will take people who are just playing the game longer to acquire .

That is certainly paying to have an advantage over another player for the time it takes them to acquire a similar ship to you and if you end up facing them before they have acquired it the chances are they have a better chance of winning in such an encounter .

I know it changes from person to person but that certainly fits in with my interpretation of pay to win .

Reader
Darkwalker75 .

So you are concerned that it will be pay to win, and you somehow seem to think that someone who refutes such a claim has to be a backer and not be entirely objective.

Lets try to clarify the definition of pay to win first, because people seem to have very differing opinions on this.
I define P2W as an ingame advantage that can only be obtained through the purchase of ingame items with real money.
If you can get the same items through regular gameplay without it being a very long grind, then there is no P2W, that is how I see it.

So how do you define P2W?

Here’s a few things for you to think over while you consider this P2W aspect that concerns you

1. The ships that’s for sale now are the basic versions.
They have low end or basic equipment, which means players will want to upgrade.
These upgrades will have to be purchased with ingame money earned through regular gameplay, they are not for sale for real money.

2. There may not be right now, but will eventually be more to the game than just combat, and the various ships are specifically designed to fill different roles.
A Hornet for instance while a great combat ship, has no cargo space and as such cannot be used for cargo transport.

3. As for combat specifically, having more , better or bigger guns, dedicated combat ship, a bigger ship or any combination of those does not guarantee a win in combat.
Sure you may have a better chance of defeating your opponent, but that is still dependent on your skill with that ship and ability to actually hit your opponent.
There are plenty of videos on youtube showing people in basic Auroras decimating dedicated combat ships such as the Hornet or bigger ships such as the Consteallation

And how would you suggest they fund the game development when the following are true?
– No Publisher or other Venture Captialist to rush development or tell them how to make their game.
– Selling basic game packs would not be enough to fund the development.
– Releasing a basic(barebones) game and adding to it later.
Elite did that and while many do enjoy it, there are just as many that think its boring and shallow and 2 years after release people are still waiting for them to release most(if not all) of the promised big features.

“Sure you may have a better chance of defeating your opponent, but that is still dependent on your skill with that ship ”

Of course that is true but a person with a lot of skill who can afford to pay for that advantage with have even more chance of winning .

This may not fit into what you think constitutes pay to win but it does mine .

Darkwalker75 .

But what advantage does the person buying with real money get over the one that does not, when they both get the exact same thing just by different means?

And that seems to be the core of the issue here.
People keep claiming that the ship sales are P2W and that buying them will get you an advantage, yet nobody has to this day been able to say exactly what kind of advantage these people actually get.

Iif those claiming P2W cannot specify that then I will just take it for granted that they don’t know or that the advantage is so insignificant(if not nonexistent) that its not worth worrying about, and that its just a convenient excuse to hack on the game for some unspecified reason.

Incremental patching got a mention which was really positive. Cannot come soon enough for me as I had given up on 20-30GB downloads just for a small update.

i always enjoy the frankfurt updates. id be happy if it was frankfurt every week.

Yeah, yeah, I know. There are people invested, but… the more updates, the more my interest wanes.

Yeah I’m kinda bored with it as well, I just want to play the damn game not get this teasing stuff all the time, especially teasing stuff that never shows any real multiplayer gameplay. It’s always just one person running around on an empty planet, in a hangar etc not actally doing anything but horizon scanning.

You are the exact type of player they are not building the game for…sorry to disappoint.

Reader

They kind of need to so they can keep people interested. Show to little people get mad, to much people get mad, show them playing game people get mad they can’t play.

Just hope when 3.0 drops it’s not bug fest with tons of problems and same crap performance

But still enough interest to click on the article and post. =)

We will know when you are truly not interested when that stops happening.

No where in the video or in this article says that real life advertising will be a thing. Control yourself. They were just demonstrating the ability to project video on multiple types of surfaces.

Wouldn’t bother me if they did. In fact I wouldn’t mind being able to click on an ad and it take me to an order screen. As long as they remain passive billboards, it just makes the world seem more real, IMHO.

Wow, maybe rather go take a chill pill and read up on emoticons instead?! :/

My magic 8 ball forsees a lot of chatter about “BALANCING” when all these funky spaceships actually “go live” and can be pitted one against the other.
I actually am not a person who worries about, or complains about, “pay to win”. I think it’s a natural that a much more expensive craft should be better/more capable than a cheap one.

But I confess I’ve got my popcorn ready to see how the gaming community handles this truth.

I think we know how this will play out. Lots of teeth-gnashing, lots of ranting and raving, lots of threats to sue/quit, petitions on change.org, all the usual man-chold stuff.

Wildstar, best game ever.

depends… a more expensive craft in the same class yeah like a aurora versus a super hornet although ive seen on youtube really good pilots decimating everything with an aurora. depends on how good you are at piloting such a craft. at the moment its hard to say what will happen because theres no penalty for losing your ship. when you start to actually lose your ship and have to get your new one from the insurance then go refit it out with your better weapons the gameplay will change and its only then they can start to balance stuff as people are more careful
