Wild West Online FAQ says the game is ‘not historically correct’

You can't play me!

Remember the days when MMOs used to post clear and concise FAQs instead of messy AMAs and lengthy developer livestreams? Wild West Online does, which is why it has a massive and informative FAQ up on its forums containing questions the community has about this project.

The FAQ confirms that an alpha test is coming in early-to-mid summer but that the devs are still hashing out several of the game’s systems, including the character skill system. Cosmetics, roleplay, housing, clans, nudity, trains, weapons, voice chat, crafting, and death penalties are among the many topics handled.

Wild West Online is confirmed to be only loosely inspired by the real world: “WWO is based on the old west of the late 1800s, early 1900s, but it’s not historically correct and will not reference on any real world events.”

The team also clarified how the server situation will work. “We will offer at start two types of servers — official servers that feature PVP and PVE mixed activities, as well as community managed and run RP servers, where the community will set their own rules for each server. All servers will be hosted by us, but we will allow players to manage some of the ‘community RP’ servers. We also will offer official servers, that will be hosted in different regions. Players will be free to join any server with no regional restrictions. Initially we’ll have servers available in North America and Europe, with more servers coming up in South America, Asia/Oceania and Russia.”

The Wild West as a whole pop-culture wise isn’t even historically correct, why would people think a video game would be any different?

Gun control in the Wild West?!!! What kind of heresy is that?

Yay, I hope that means they aren’t going to have to put slaves everywhere and muck with sticking genders in certain roles. There is already a good variety in that concept art, but could use a little more ethnic varieties as well ;)

I wanna play a badass like Django Unchained, but, like, minus allll the racism that movie revolves around :P

And the MassivelyOP comments went wild. *crowd cheers*

He rode a blazing saddle, he wore a shining star
His job, to offer battle, to bad men near and far
He conquered fear, and he conquered hate
He turned our night into day
He made his blazing saddle, a torch to light the way
When outlaws ruled the west, and fear filled the land
A cry went up for a man with guts, to take the West in hand
They needed a man who was brave and true,
With justice for all as his aim
Then out of the sun rode a man with a gun,
And Bart was his name. Yes, Bart was his name!

I have no doubts that it won’t matter how fictionalized they make it. Somebody will be offended.

Well, good. It’s meant to be a fun game not a srs bsns re-enactment. Wild West isn’t a setting I care too much about but I gather it is pretty popular, so allowing historical flexibility for the sake of fun seems like a no-brainer for me.

May the wailing and gnashing of teeth end.

PVE and RP are in.

Also, I prefer that real history be left out. Easier to avoid the Mary Sue.

Whatever. As long as it’s fun. it’s not like any of the past or present pirate-themed MMO’s out there are historically accurate either.

The Wild West has rarely ever been accurately portrayed in movies. It’s always just about cowboys, maybe sometimes with some railroad/Indian/slavery stuff but still tending to make the Americans look like the good guys in the end.

If you want historical accuracy then you’d have to highlight all of the ugly areas of the period, and that tends to get easily marred by political and social views due to looking back on things in hindsight over a century later.

Slavery

Chinese racism
Yeah the American wild west was a great time. To bad game devs are to chicken to just make a historically accurate western game. So what if it offends some people. We are living in the age of Trump now. All joking aside though it would be kind of boring if it was historically accurate. I am curious how the gameplay will be. The guns of the old west are different from any guns in any modern shooter. They are a lot slower and less accurate too. You will have to reload that six shooter.

Slavery per se wouldn’t have been present. The setting is post-Civil War and a plantation economy never existed is the ‘Old West.’ It still wouldn’t have been a great place to be black, but organized racism wasn’t as big an issue as in the East.

Yeah, the imported Chinese had a rough time. Women.

The Irish had it rough too. There were incidents of simply killing Irish workers instead of paying them. They were basically slave labor for things like the railroad and other projects.

Slavery never vanishes … it is just repurposed and reinvented.

Way to waste a fun time. We all know the history. Thanks.

Don’t leave out the range wars, the water wars or the silver wars.

As to weaponry, the period they are looking at was very exciting for the the engineering and development of firearms. Interested to see if they incorporate any of the technical advancements of the period into their design or whether they just stick with generic things like “six-shooter” and “rifle” and “ammunition”.

Given the time period, there wasn’t a lot of occupations to take up so I imagine not being correct opens up more possibilities to more things to do.

Blacksmith, rancher, law enforcement, barkeep, prostitute, buggy maker, leather worker, ranch hand, carpenter, shop keeper, butcher, hunter, gunsmith.

Lots of stuff.

And yet, only 4 or 5 of those ever really get converted into a videogame.

quark – Indeed. Crafting is just generally average overall in MMOs, just my opinion. If a typical MMO lets us construct mounts, for instance – they will just sell something better in the cash shop or perhaps have them RNG in raids. Which negates the need for the crafter.

Tamable off-brand rancor please. I need one of those following me around towns and clipping through all the buildings. For immersion.
